HEROES SHED NO TEARS: Eddy Ko Is Trapped Behind Enemy Lines In An Exclusive Clip
Making its streaming debut at Film Movement Plus on June 7 is John Woo’s 1986 war thriller, Heroes Shed No Tears. The film features Eddy Ko and Lam Ching-Ying in a film that once remained shelved until Woo’s subsequent A Better Tomorrow was released, making Woo a hit director and allowing the previous flick to get some screentime before audiences.
In this explosive precursor to his breakout film A Better Tomorrow, director John Woo demonstrates the genesis of his trademark style of hyperkinetic action and violence in the thriller he identified as his “first real film”, breaking a string of low-budget slapstick farces, and building the foundation for his over-the-top genre films that would follow. Making its exclusive North American streaming premiere on Film Movement Plus, HEROES SHED NO TEARS sports a brilliant 2K digital restoration for an optimal viewing experience.
Hong Kong action veteran Eddie Ko (The Mission, Lethal Weapon 4) stars as soldier-of-fortune Chan Chung, the leader of an elite Chinese commando force enlisted by the Thai government to capture General Samton, a powerful drug lord from the Golden Triangle. After a successful raid on the general’s headquarters, the mercenaries cross into Vietnam and encounter a barbaric colonel (Lam Ching Ying), who is determined to stop them at any cost. Now pursued by both Samton’s henchmen and the colonel’s troops, the heroes flee for the border of Thailand, outmanned and outgunned by their enemies.
Woo directed from a script he co-wrote with Peter Ho-Sun Chan, and Leung-Chun Chiu. Ko and Lam are just a few of the core stars of the film along with Philippe Loffredo who can be seen in an exclusive clip we’ve been handed to share below.
The clip takes place at a moment in the second half of the film when Ko is captured by a vindictive Vietnamese colonel with a serious grudge. The scene also includes actor Ma Ying-Chun who plays Ko’s on screen son in a defining moment that certainly lends to the title.
I dove into that analysis and more here in my review on Monday. Check out the clip below and have a read here!
