Is 'Kingsman' Helmer Matthew Vaughn Up To Remake FLASH GORDON?

Director Matthew Vaughn’s got a fan base. He’s certainly made sure of that with hits like the 2008 film, Kick-Ass, the 2012 mutant superhero epic, X-Men: First Class and this year’s gentleman’s action-packed adventure adaptation, Kingsman: The Secret Service, and if you want more with him at the helm, feel free to take a gander at what’s happening with the long-developing remake, Flash Gordon.

Plans to remake the film have been around for a while now, notably for Sahara helmer Breck Eisner to direct for Colombia Pictures long before it was finally picked up by Twentieth Century Fox in April last year. Now, THR is reporting that Vaughn is now in talks to direct the film based on the 1934 comic strip which saw its way to several film releases. The most notable film adaptation hails from the British 1980 feature with actor and then-Playgirl centerfold Sam Jones in the title role of a popular football star who unwittingly finds himself on a mission to save Earth from an intergalactic dictator named Ming.

The film is notorious for its camp and cheesy fun whilst having attained its fair share of commerical and critical success, and cult popularity among fans. For this, it’s a role Jones himself also carries proudly throughout his career, having reappeared briefly as himself in the 2012 raunchy comedy, Ted. John Davis and George Nolfi are producing the new film with scribes J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay working a script from Nolfi’s own treatment.
