Live-Action ONE PIECE Adaption to Sail with Netflix!
Legendary Shonen Jump manga One Piece may be moving towards it’s conclusion, but it seems we’re far from done with adventuring with the Straw Hat Pirates! Netflix has reaffirmed via its 2021 Japan Festival that it will be teaming up with the creator of the franchise, mangaka Eiichiro Oda, to create a live action drama series based on the worldwide hit.
First published in 1997 in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, One Piece is the story of a crew of pirates led by Monkey D. Luffy, and their search for a legendary treasure hidden by Gol D. Roger. His crew, known as the Straw Hat Pirates, face adventure and adversity all over the world as they meet friends, rivals, and foes. Oh, and did we mention that Luffy can’t swim? Due to eating a magic fruit called a Devil Fruit, he gains the ability to stretch his body to incredible proportions, but loses his ability to swim in exchange. But of course, Luffy isn’t the only one sailing the high seas with special abilities! The manga has sold over 490 million copies as of July 2021.
Matt Owens (Producer, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) will write the screenplay and serve as executive producer through Bad Robot, J.J. Abram’s production company. Additional EPs include Steven Maeda, (Producer, Helix) whom will also share writing duties and serve as showrunner.. Tomorrow Studios (a partnership between Marty Adelstein and ITV Studios) will co-produce the show with Netflix. Netflix is in charge of physical production. The show, which has been in the works for several years now, is said to be a re-telling of Luffy’s origin story. Oda has previously mentioned that Netflix has ordered a first season of 10 episodes, and producer Adelstein has said that all ten scripts are written. Production is currently said to be scheduled in Cape Town, South Africa. Production properly began in March 2021.
