I’ve had handfuls of conversations about Peter Berg’s Mile 22, and they do sort of speak to my dimming enthusiasm for the film since the lot us penned and hyped the possibility of seeing Iko Uwais flourish in a new potential franchise.
Admittedly, the more the PR became centric on Mark Wahlberg, the less I was sold on the idea of this film actually being prospective, and then came the reviews and reactions upon its theatrical release last month.It was also off-putting to learn in an interview at Empire that the creation of the character Wahlberg plays was partly inspired by this blithering piece of shit in particular, politics nothwithstanding. Needless to say, I saved my money and so I plan on streaming this one instead.
Clearly there are a select number of critics whose reviews have been cherrypicked specifically to help sell this film to homebound consumers and likely martial arts fans keen on seeing Uwais or even Ronda Rousey in action. Granted, I haven’t seen the film yet, but to say I won’t be disappointed somehow is pretty much turning a blind eye to the obvious.
Amazingly, the film did slightly well at the box office and with all the pre-emptive sequel stirring there was, we could very well see what goes down in one. All I ask is there be another director with a better vision and a more tactful handling of its development and execution. Until then, we have Mile 22 arriving this Fall.
