MONKEY MAN Trailer: Dev Patel Ain’t Monkeying Around In His Latest Action Adventure From Universal!
I don’t know exactly when Jordan Peele boarded Dev Patel’s new action thriller, Monkey Man, for as long as I’ve been trying to keep up. It’s pretty damn suprising as well considering how low key news and updates have been in the last several years as production contended with regional and atmospheric hurdles, along with the pandemic that began in 2020.
The good news though is that our collective patience is now being rewarded with news of Peele’s attachment via his Monkeypaw label alongside Thunder Road, Bron Studios, Minor Realm/S’Ya Concept, WME and Creative Wealth Media now breaking, along with an official trailer for Patel’s debut at the helm. Monkey Man was previously a Netflix propsect and now that is no longer the case with Universal Pictures taking the mantle this time, slating a theatrical release on April 4.
Oscar® nominee Dev Patel (Lion, Slumdog Millionaire) achieves an astonishing, tour-de-force feature directing debut with an action thriller about one man’s quest for vengeance against the corrupt leaders who murdered his mother and continue to systemically victimize the poor and powerless.
Inspired by the legend of Hanuman, an icon embodying strength and courage, Monkey Man stars Patel as Kid, an anonymous young man who ekes out a meager living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash.
After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him.
Packed with thrilling and spectacular fight and chase scenes, Monkey Man is directed by Dev Patel from his original story and his screenplay with Paul Angunawela and John Collee (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World).
Patel honing his long-lauded martial arts prowess once again on the big screen and Copley stepping in as the hype man to lead the way is what we get in the trailer below, packed with the kind of neo-noir-drenched John Wick style fisticuffs and fan service with a touch of ringside fervor, with action seqences by fight choreographer Brahim Chab (The Driver, Warrior Savitri) and the elite members of Indonesia’s Pejuang Stunt team.
Take a look!
