Simon McQuoid’s Mortal Kombat is moving up seven weeks from its March 5, 2021 date to January 15, 2021, according to the trades reporting on Warner Bros. Pictures’ release date announcements and updates.

Plot and story details remain on hold while fans continue to pine over the various social media accounts of the cast and producers to get the latest nugget from the set of the South Australia production.

Presented by New Line Cinema, production began on September 15 and has since grown a cast that now includes Joe Taslim as Sub Zero, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Bridges, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Max Huang as Kung Lao, Sisi Stringer as Mileena, and Elissa Cadwell as Nitara. The only cast members so far whose roles remain unclear are those of martial arts star, actor Lewis Tan, and young actress Matilda Kimber.

The film relaunches the longstanding franchise inspired principally by the popularly violent hit videogame series that launched in 1992 from Midway, and the films and shows that followed suit over the years. The game series is now home to Warner Bros. subsidiary, Netherealm Studios, where it has since continued its progression since 2011, now with the most recent release, “Mortal Kombat 11”.

McQuoid, previously a commercial director, makes his feature debut at the helm from a script by Greg Russo who himself has promised fans that the film will garner an R-rating. James Wan is producing along with Todd Garner. Larry Kasanoff, E. Bennett Walsh, Michael Clear and Jeremy Stein are exec producing.
