PACIFIC RIM Is Officially Getting A Netflix Original Anime Series

Pacific Rim is finally getting an animated series.

That’s right. Netflix launched its first-ever content showcase this week, “See What’s Next: Asia” hosted by CEO Reed Hastings. The region-targeted announcement listed seventeen new and original projects, including an anime adaptation of the live-action creature thrillers helmed in the span of five years by Guillermo Del Toro and subsequently by Steven DeKnight.

Returning to the epic battle of Kaiju and Jaegers, this original anime series will expand upon the story of the first two live action movies and follow two siblings – an idealistic teenage boy and his naïve younger sister – who are forced to pilot an abandoned Jaeger across a hostile landscape in a desperate attempt to find their missing parents.

Warner Bros. released the first film from Del Toro in 2013. While it wasn’t the big box office hit that some felt it should have been, its cult following and support drew enough inspiration for a sequel. That film, from DeKnight, evidently switching hands to Universal Pictures for its release this past Spring. Together, both films have a have grossed upwards of $701 million dollars.

Craig Kyle (Thor: Ragnarok) and Greg Johnson (X-Men: Evolution) are serving as showrunners on the new animated series which, as with the films, also hails from Legendary Entertainment (Kong: Skull Island; Pokemon: Detective Pikachu). An exact official premiere date remains pending.

More to come…
