PAPER MADE Adds Michael Jai White To Ryan Watson’s Fraternal Martial Arts Thriller Feature Debut
Deadline is reporting that Michael Jai White (Never Back Down 3: No Surrender, Trouble Man, Blood And Bone) is joining the cast of Paper Made, director Ryan Watson’s new fraternal martial arts thriller he co-wrote with Jerron Horton. Details on the role remain pending while I can report that Watson has had an interest in casting White for the film in the months leading up to last month’s breaking news coverage.
White joins a roster led by actor Myles Truitt (Kin, STARZ series “BMF”) for Paper Made which reboots Watson’s back to back “Paper Line” shortfilms based on the same concept. Set at a fictional HBCU, Paper Made follows Tavon Watkins (Truitt), who after a severe hazing incident threatens his academic standing, must pledge a secret fraternity of black martial artists that forces him to confront his ego, legacy, and the true meaning of brotherhood.
Production is currently underway with a cast that further aligns White with a spate of genre mainstays, including Taimak (The Last Dragon) and Walter E. Jones (“Saban’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers,” Love And A Bullet), and White’s Welcome To Sudden Death cohort, Marrese Crump (Jiu Jitsu). Rounding out the cast are Quartay DeNaya (Inverted.film series “Pizza Guys Vs Vampires”), Marcus Crump, and and wrestlers Daria Rae Berenato and Jamara Garrett (a.k.a. Mara Sadè), as well as veteran actor/stuntmen Devante Thomas (Sinners), Sam Lee Herring (Back in Action), martial arts sensation Jair Muhammad and reality TV star De’Andre Ashbury (Love Island), in addition to martial arts wunderkinds Michael Quick McGee and Cequence Henry who will also return for the reboot following their appearances in the shortfilms.
