PLAYER AGENCY: Director Joey Min Talks Filming His Second Feature In Virtual Reality
“It’s an action adventure comedy about hitting rock-bottom only to find out it’s the start of a new quest. Literally,” said Joey Min of his new film, Player Agency.
Min took to his YouTube channel on Thursday to share the first of a series of featurette on the film, its development and evolution since 2021. The film stars Kage Yami as a depressed, out-of-work homebody who finds renewed purpose in a VR-based adventure RPG, questing his way through a realm ruled by a tyrannical “Lich King”, and battling demons both virtual and internal to take his life back.
“How we did this project is wildly different from anything that has been done before,” said Min, who goes into explaining the film’s conceptual bearings as it was made mostly in virtual reality. “Now this is different from motion capture or animation. This is us acting out in real-time to be filmed in real-time with equipment available to the masses,”.
Player Agency marks a follow-up in the feature film arena since their “My Asian Auntie” webseries sequel, Yes, Auntie!, which screened in 2019 and was later acquired for release Digital Media Rights imprint, Midnight Pulp. The new movie also screened exclusive footage for attendees of the eleventh edition of the Urban Action Showcase & Expo back in 2023.
Post-production is in its final leg while a Summer TBA online release via the Art School Dropouts YouTube channel is in the works, as well as a hopeful screening at this year’s 13th UASE. Check out the featurette below, and visit the group’s official website for more information.
