QUIZTOPIA: ‘The Naked Director’ Star Leads New Dystopian Quiz Show Drama From ‘Alice In Borderland,’ ‘Yu Yu Hakusho’ Team

Takayuki Yamada (Ushijima the Loan Shark, Crows Zero, “The Naked Director”) is set to star in Quiztopia, based on a hit manga to be directed by Teruyuki Yoshida (Amachan, NEO – Office Chuckles, The 13 Lords of the Shogun) for Netflix. Yoshida and co-writer Magy are adapting the series which takes its cues from the 1993 Ohta Publishing publication by author Reiichi Sugimoto and artist Shinkichi Kato.

Yamada will play the role of a charismatic host of a government-sanctioned quiz show that encompasses the entertainment array of an alternate Japan. Contestants who win have any wish granted by the government, whereas those who lose face severe consequences, such as fines, forced labor or conscription. When a group of dissidents aiming to overthrow the system confronts the host, a frenzy begins to unfold, setting the stage for a tale of ambition, rebellion and human nature.

Netflix is producing Quiztopia in association with THE SEVEN, Inc., the studio behind hit shows like “Yu Yu Hakusho,” and Shinsuke Sato’s “Alice In Borderland” the latter which is also in toe for a third season. Hirotake Sasaki, and Tomoki Takase are producing the series with Shinichi Takahashi (City Hunter, “Tokyo Swindlers”) exec producing, and Akira Morii (“Alice in Borderland,” “Yu Yu Hakusho”) serving as chief producer, and action sequences coordinated by Hiroyuki Yoshida (Dororo, Resident Evil: Degeneration, “The Naked Director”).
