Screenwriter Chad Law (Daylight’s End, Drive Hard) will reteam with noted cinematographer, now debut director Carmen Cabana for action thriller, Redeemer. Production is slated for the summer with Bluegrass Pictures CEO Joel Shapiro serving as producer.

Redeemer centers on a former Catholic priest who has renounced his faith and religious ties to enact violent retribution against the gang who murdered his mentor and fellow priests. The very linchpin of his revenge campaign is ultimately tied to his own past, in a story that will soon force him to take stock of his own violent acts, and perhaps help return him back to a path of faith and hopeful redemption.

“I am very excited to bring a female perspective to it and be a part of this fantastic project. Me encanta!” Cabana said in a statement on Tuesday.

Cabana makes her freshman foray into directing since making her way into the industry just under twenty years ago in the camera field. She has since emerged as one of the top female and in demand cinematographers in the film industry, with select credits such as Law’s scripted action thriller for Daniel Zirilli, Hollow Point, Danny Trejo crime pic, Bullet, and hit Netflix series, Narcos.

Cabana cited her childhood influences in action cinema stretching from Hollywood to South Korea, Japan and Brazil, describing her versatile moviegoing experience as inherently leaning toward the preferred genre with a collection by the hundreds. She says her aim will be to bring together her influences for she says will be “dark, fast paced, and yet full of character complexity and heart.”

Cabana also underscored the issue of inclusion crediting Shapiro and the production for playing a pivotal role in “actually actively working to make it a reality.”

She adds, “I am grateful to my friend Joel Shapiro for supporting female and minority directors, particularly in a genre in which many wrongfully assume is no place for female voices.”

“I have been following Carmen’s career for many years,” said Shapiro. “She is an artist and a great story teller; we are honored and lucky to have her directing this film.”

Cabana also served as cinematographer on Hollow Point, penned by Law who was recently attached to the current development of William Kaufman’s Scott Adkins action thriller, Vigilante.

Bluegrass Pictures shares recent theatrical releases such as Liam Hemsworth actioner Killerman, Dear Dictator starring Michael Caine, Katie Holmes and Jason Biggs, and Beast of Burden, starring Daniel Radcliffe, and are now in post production with Frank Grillo pic, No Man’s Land, and Die In A Gunfight, starring Alexandra Dadarrio, Diego Boneta and Travis Fimmel.

Bluegrass Pictures is repped by David Fritz of Boyarski Fritz law firm.
