In Memoriam: Lee Hoi-Sang (1941-2024)
It’s a sad day for kung fu cinema as news of Lee Hoi-sang’s death hit the internet this morning. Those that don’t know his name almost definitely know his face as he appeared in over 115 action films over the years, including an absolute wealth of classics. He featured in The 3th Chamber of Shaolin, The Magnificent Butcher, Warriors Two, Dynamo, Heroes of the East, Knockabout, Shaolin Prince, Project A, and Miracles, as well as many, many more.
As a Wing Chun master (he was one of Yip Man’s disciples), he found his way into the film industry througfh being a Martial Arts Consultant. This graduated to performing in front of the camera and, eventually, getting meatier roles, mostly as a villain or Shaolin monk – and sometimes both!
As well as his movie stardom, he worked a lot in television, and can be seen in TV series’ such as The Legend of the Condor Heroes and The Flying Fox of Snowy Mountain.
From Shaw Brothers to Golden Harvest to Bruceploitation, Lee Hoi-sang became one of the emost memorable faces in kung fu cinema. His filmography cements his legacy as a true legend. If you have time today, perhaps stick a Lee Hoi-sang film in the Blu-ray player.
Rest in Peace.
