SDCC 2013: Warner Bros. Announces Next Man Of Steel Film As Part Of DC Cinematic Universe

According to prior statements made by Man Of Steel star Henry Cavill, a Justice League would not be likely to happen soon unless other films were done to help create the universe to fit the characters. This was particularly the case with The Avengers as it had 2 Iron Man movies, 2 Hulk movies, and initial film installments of Captain America and Thor, both with sequels pending, and largely why The Avengers continues to be so successful.

Also, interestingly enough, with Christian Bale retiring the Batsuit with The Dark Knight trilogy helmer Christopher Nolan‘s involvment with the sequel previously unknown at the time, there has also been talk of the next Batman film following the Batman Beyond story seperate from the Batman Nolanverse.

I gotta say, it sounds like a lot of hype with people throwing out a lot of possibilities for the future of the character. Truth be told though, Warner Bros and DC Comics must take the time to create the universe to make a Justice League movie possible. And from the looks of things over at Hall H panel at the San Diego Comic Con on Saturday, it looks like they may do just that.

Here is the official statement, courtesy of ComingSoon.net:

On the heels of the worldwide success of “Man of Steel,” director Zack Snyder is bringing together the two greatest Super Heroes of all time—Batman and Superman—for the first time on the big screen. The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, and Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

The current hit, “Man of Steel,” has taken in more than $630 million at the worldwide box office to date, and climbing. Along with its star, Henry Cavill, the upcoming film brings back Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane. The new Batman has yet to be cast.

Snyder is co-writing the story with David S. Goyer, who will then pen the screenplay. Production is expected to begin in 2014, with an anticipated release date in Summer 2015.

Silverman stated, “Zack Snyder is an incredibly talented filmmaker, but beyond that, he’s a fan first and he utterly gets this genre. We could not think of anyone better suited to the task of bringing these iconic Super Heroes to the screen in his own way.” Kroll added, “We are thrilled to be back in business with Zack and his team on this next movie. The success of ‘Man of Steel’ is a wonderful testament to the love and support that both fans and new audiences, worldwide, have for these characters. We are very excited to see what Zack has in store for all of us.

“Diane Nelson, President, DC Entertainment, noted, “Superman and Batman together on the big screen is a dream come true for DC fans everywhere. All of us at DC Entertainment could not be more excited for Zack’s continuing vision for the DC Universe.”

Zack Snyder, who made a surprise appearance at Comic-Con today, breaking the news to audiences there, later said, “I’m so excited to begin working again with Henry Cavill in the world we created, and I can’t wait to expand the DC Universe in this next chapter. Let’s face it, it’s beyond mythological to have Superman and our new Batman facing off, since they are the greatest Super Heroes in the world.”

The new film brings back Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder as producers. This time, Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas are serving as executive producers, along with Benjamin Melniker and Michael E. Uslan.Thomas offered, “Whilst our ‘Dark Knight’ trilogy is complete, we have every confidence that Zack’s fresh interpretation will take the character in a new and exciting direction.

His vision for Superman opened the door to a whole new universe and we can’t wait to see what Zack does with these characters.

“The film is based on Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster, and Batman characters created by Bob Kane, published by DC Entertainment.

The Hollywood Reporter also stated that a Flash movie will be worked in for a 2016 release prior to the hotly-anticipated League film a year later.
Back in May before Man Of Steel was released, Cavill expressed his own optimism for the possible classic big screen double team, saying, “I think it would be really interesting with the age-old Batman/Superman conflict because they are two different sides of the same coin and their methods are entirely different. And I think it would actually make for an interesting story as to why, first of all, they were going head to head and how. I think that would make a great story. Who knows, I’m sure there’s all sorts of ideas being thrown around at Warner Bros right now.”
My thoughts on this are pretty fair, I think. While things are abound for the Justice League film to happen, I still get testy with there being no Wonder Woman movie after all these years. A film was reported to be confirmed a few years ago, with MMA goddess, actress Gina Carano hyped to play the role at one point. Although nowadays, Gina will be likely busy helping bring Goddessy character Avengelyne to the big screen in the months to come, which is why she won’t likely be involved with anything Wonder-releated.
Plus, well…drama.
The next few years are looking good folks! Stay tuned for more news on this story.
