SHAOLIN AVENGERS: Go Behind-The-Scenes Of The New Martial Club Kung Fu Short!
A new behind-the-scenes featurette is online for Martial Club shortfilm production, Shaolin Avengers. The project is an independent short produced in-house and performed by the stewards of the label, Andy Le, Brian Le, Daniel Mah, and D.Y. Sao.
“This has been our mission from day one, to preserve the dying art of kung fu,” said Andy Le, who alluded to the more spiritual aspects of the art as opposed to its material fighting applications. He also gave a little more of a plot description which contributes to this narrative, which centers on “three brothers who are holding up the very last lineage of the dying art of kung fu.”
Martial Club has been inching toward a feature film project since formally announcing one back in 2020. Its members have since accrued a number of studio credits under other directors, partly including Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), and Daniels (Everything Everywhere All At Once).
“It was a very tall task to prepare for this film because I knew who was gonna be on screen with me,” said Sao. “It’s intimidating to be on the same screen with Martial Club. Everyone’s so talented. It’s more like I wanted to make sure I did my job.”
“The amazing part about Martial Club is that we have a big support system and an amazing family that’s willing to just help us because they believe in the vision and through the kindness of their hearts they would just come on and do the s**t with us,” added Brian Le who reunites with Sao as an on-screen opponent after two features, namely Chaya Supannarat’s Bangkok Dog, and the late Pearry Teo’s dark fantasy thriller, Shadow Master.
“When you’re passionate about something, you find a way to make it work,” said Mah. “…This passion was poured into the belief that we are bringing a dying thing back to life.
Shaolin Avengers will mark the team’s preliminary effort toward getting the concept into feature film fruition. The short premieres on the Martial Club YouTube channel on March 10.
