2022 has been a crucial year for moviegoers outside of the Far East and looking forward to catching Shinji Higuchi’s recent blockbuster hit Shin Ultraman, following its Japan release back in May.
As of Monday, pat yourselves on the back for keeping up with the latest on the film’s movement with word via Leo Barraclough’s Variety exclusive that The Exchange has acquired sales rights for multiple territories on the pic and will sell to buyers this month at the 47th Toronto International Film Festival. Among the areas are North America, Europe, Latin America, Australia, and New Zealand, to name a few.
Produced by Tsuburaya Productions, Toho and Khara, Shin Ultraman is the latest anniversarial revamp of the iconic Tsuburaya IP, 55 years since its creation now with Higuchi partnering once again with Hideaki Anno, who also penned the pic and served as one of the producers; The two previously collaborated on Shin Godzilla, sold by Toho to Funimation for its North American release back in 2016.
“We are honored and excited to bring this iconic IP and film to the global fan-base out there, as well as a new generation of fans after coming off its highly successful theatrical release in Japan,” said Nat McCormick, president of worldwide sales and distribution for The Exchange.
The film screened for festivals following its release, among which included this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival and the New York Asian Film Festival. My recommendation of this film comes with few caveats, and I truly believe that any action film fan, even those turned off by Shin Godzilla or those unfamiliar with tokusatsu outside of knowing who the original Power Rangers are, can have a great time with it. While not a perfect film by any means, the love and reverence for the source material is in every frame of this film, and it would be hard to come away from this film not craving even just three more minutes of action.
