Live-Action SLEEPING DOGS Rolls Cameras With Donnie Yen In 2019

There’s at least one small update regarding actor and action star Donnie Yen’s involvement in an upcoming Sleeping Dogs movie. It was back in March of last year in a Deadline exclusive that the Ip Man franchise star was confirmed with the actor reaffirming the film’s production this past February.

Yen took to an interview with Edmund Lee at the South China Morning Post on Wednesday with word of a 2019 production start. “I’ve finally found my screenwriter.” said Yen, “It’s a very ambitious project.”

The film is based on the Square Enix game which took off in 2012, followed by a remastered version in 2014, and tells of an undercover cop transferred to Hong Kong to infiltrate the Triads. Neal Mortiz of Original Film is producing with DJ2 Entertainment with Moritz, Dmitri Johnson and Dan Jevons producing and Toby Ascher and Stephan Bugaj executive producing and a director still to be named.

Yen, who stars in Kam Ka-Wai’s Big Brother this weekend overseas, still has several films on the docket, including Enter The Fat Dragon from Kenji Tanigaki and Wong Jing and Crossfire with Benny Chan. The actor was recently added to the roster for Niki Caro’s Liu Yifei headliner, Mulan, for Disney, while Ip Man 4 readies a hopeful late 2018 release commemorating the ten-year anniversary since the first film…in which he and Jackie Chan apparently DON’T have a fight scene… like, AT ALL.

Damn you, Jaynestars.
