Streaming Sleepers: Lee Joon-Gi Finds Justice, Love And Purpose In LAWLESS LAWYER
I don’t have a lot of free time on my hands. As a result, shows and films tend to pile up and I miss out. A lot.
Thankfully, last year saw me able to get a little more preoccupied with Netflix and get myself acquainted with one of the most surprisingly entertaining Korean dramas you’ll ever see on streaming: tvN’s 2018 program, Lawless Lawyer.
I caught this show at the time Cowboy Bebop launched and eventually fizzled, and so Lawless Lawyer was definitely able to pick up the slack in some areas, with slick performances by well-rounded cast with none other than actors Lee Joon-gi, Seo Yea-ji, Lee Hye-young and Choi Min-soo.
Clocked in at sixteen episodes, Lawless Lawyer takes off as the death of a city Mayor ensues an underhanded takeover plot by a former gangster-turned-corporate shark with his own political aspirations. A long-awaited act of vengeance commences for a skilled, unorthodox lawyer who emerges to deliver his own brand of justice.
Like all K-dramas, Lawless Lawyer is an extensive affair with each episode ranging up to well over an hour, so your binge-rate is entirely up to you, as it’s not a snackable affair to dive right into with just one sitting.
For this, you get to see a number of arcs flourish from start to finish between our leads and supporting co-stars, a little cheesy humor, some terrific action sequences, and some very interesting twists and hero/villain double-team moments. The way this show will end becomes albeit very clear, which you know if you’re familiar with tenets of Asian filmmaking and entertainment, generally, but the show definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat through what the actors deliver here.
All in all, it’s a fun show, and I’m surprised Lee hasn’t stepped up for a lead action role in a feature film project. He certainly lives up to the part in both drama and action departments, and if given the opportunity, I hope he welcomes it.
In the meantime, watch our hero fall in love, fall in cahoots among strange bedfellows, and fight his way out of sticky situations using his fists, and formally, the law where it counts the most, in Lawless Lawyer. Watch it now on Netflix or Rakuten Viki.
