HEAT 2: Michael Mann Confirms Sequel To 1995 Hit Crime Thriller Will Be His Next Film

Deadline’s Andreas Wiseman is exclusively reporting confirmation of the long-awaited sequel to Michael Mann’s 1995 hit crime thriller, Heat, as of Friday. The filmmaker made the announcement at the news firm’s Contenders Event in London while currently campaigning his latest banner work, Ferrari, starring Adam Driver. The news comes six months after Warner Bros. Pictures gave public notice of its active development of a sequel, eyeing Driver for the role of professional thief Neil McCauley, previously played by Robert DeNiro in the first film. The character is revisited in the sequel novel which Mann penned alongside co-author Meg Gardiner and released in 2021. Heat was produced by Art Linson alongside Mann who wrote the pic, and starred Robert DeNiro as McCauley opposite Al Pacino as ex-Marine-cum-Los Angeles detective Vincent Hanna. Barring any dispositions you might have about Hollywood’s latest stab at English-language period epics set in, say, France, the latest trailer for Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel has a little meat on its medieval bones as seen in the first official trailer out of 21st Century Studios. Swordplay drama with a dash of crime and controversy and jabs of patriarchy and theocratic rule certainly set the pace here some. An adaptation of Eric Jager’s own 2004 novel, The Last Duel takes place in 14th century France and centers its dark and violent tale on Norman knight Jean de Carrouges, who returns from war and learns his wife, Marguerite de Carrouges, has been raped by former friend, squire Jacques Le Gris, who denies the allegations. New trailers and such, the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi remains impending with a December 15 date and the campaign is going hard and heavy for the fandom with as much trailer and TV spottage as it can consume. For me, I’ll just leave it off here unless noted, and with what’s been cited as the final international trailer now online for Rian Johnson’s offering as the eighth canon entry into the longstanding space saga with talking and bleeping droids, creatures, galactic deep space dog fights and epic existential battles on opposite sides of the Force and what have you. Monday Night Football wasn’t my go-to for screening the final epic trailer for Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi. That said, the new footage can now be seen online hailing the continuing epic saga with Daisy Ridley as the latest, albeit conflicted addition to a revamped war against a militaristic space empire as the pendulum swings between underlying symbiotic forces wielded by the Sith and the Jedi. Pioneering franchise star Mark Hamill remerges once again as aged iconic sci-fi hero Luke Skywalker as does the late Carrie Fisher in the role of General Leia Organa, along with reprising actors John Boyega, Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver. Leaving all sorts of questions in its wake on top of its huge box office success, the events seen in J.J. Abrams’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens now get their hotly anticipated continuation in the upcoming eighth canon installation, Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The official trailer and poster premiered during Star Wars Celebration with director Rian Johnson, cast members in attendance. Next to the new additions of Benicio del Toro, Laura Dern, and actress Kelly Marie Tran who also joined in on the events on Friday, of course there’s question about who will return and who likely won’t. And for that matter, it’s a film that is sure to pay plenty of homage to the icons of its franchise, both living and departed. The pressure was on for director J.J. Abrams in the months leading up to the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and lo and behold, the efforts have been met with praise, and a gross thusfar of well over $2 billion dollars globally in ticket sales. As for the film, well…things happened, people died and Rey herself, played by actress Daisy Ridley, ended up with lightsaber skills of her own thus bringing a new heroine into the mix (despite initially being shortchanged her own toy in her likeness). Alas, the bar has been set for the new trilogy which now on par for a tie-in this December, Rian Johnson’s sequel a year thereafter and others to come, and so now we welcome, naturally, a home release of Abrams’s own film scheduled for the first week of April. Yes, we know there’s been an awakening. And yes, we’ve felt it…or whatever else anyone of us might be feeling aside from it in similar capacity. What we also know is actor John Boyega will be wielding a badass lightsaber in pure Jedi fashion as Finn opposite Adam Driver in the role of Kylo Ren who, judging by blurbs from around the web, either may or may not be a Sith. At any rate, Star Wars: The Force Awakens looks like an early box-office Christmas present for Disney and Lucasfilm.
