Back to stir the Hong Kong action nostalgia some is filmmaker Adrian Castro with another offering in the Tiger Cop shortfilm saga with Tiger Cop: Project A. Castro reunites with Echo 8 trilogy shepherd Maria Tran, who leads a cast that also brings aboard screen legend Richard Norton (Magic Crystal, Twinkle Twinkle Lucky Stars). Fans of the independent Fideo Films and Phoenix Eye platforms are reconvening once more for another entry into the cult “Tiger Cop” shortfilm saga with Tiger Cop: Project A. Aussie director Adrian Castro will reteam with rising star Maria Tran (Tracer, Suka, Echo 8) on the new short with cameras rolling in Sydney and Melbourne in December. Tran will lead a cast that also lists Melbourne-based collaborators Vinh Nguyen, martial artists Louis Damien Chaurémootoo and David Hong, and comedian/actor Georgina Neville. Further bolstering the roster is legendary action star Richard Norton, whose credits partly include Twinkle Twinke Lucky Stars (1985), China O’Brien (1988) and its 1990 sequel, as well as Mr. Nice Guy (1987), Mad Max: Fury Road and its 2024 prequel, Furiosa, and upcoming Cynthia Rothrock Western vehicle, Black Creek. The concept behind Tiger Cop: Project A is a highly celebrated one for fans of the 80s and early-90s […]
If there’s ever a case to be made to support a film that truly pays homage to classic action movies of the 80s and 90s, I can point to a few creatives out there in the world who can actually capture that aesthetic. Aussie director Adrian Castro has certainly proven ample in that effort in his collaborations with burgeoning independent film star Maria Tran (Echo 8) on projects like the “Tiger Cop” concept trailers and shorts they’ve done over the years. Currently, you can sample those ideas and more at Castro’s Fideo Films YouTube channel where the duo have also just unveiled their latest concept trailer for Dragon Fire, pitting Tran and her fellow Phoenix Eye cohorts Takashi Hara and Therese Chen squarely in a gritty, Hong Kong action-inspired tale of vengeance that looks like something right out of today’s Vingear Syndrome genre catalogue. A Sydney police detective races against […]
Film duo Maria Tran and Adrian Castro have been filmmaking for longer than I’ve been writing, and that includes paying homage to 80s Hong Kong action fanfare with a series of shorts dubbed Tiger Cop. With a feature treatment still somewhere down the pipeline, one can only hope they’ll reach their destination seeing as the two clearly have what it takes to recreate the desired aesthetic. Until then, here’s another humble offering with Tran and actress Lara Balog in Tiger Cop: Yes, Madam!, rendered in 4K for your enjoyment if you have but a couple of minutes to spare!
Still in the midst of completing her latest documentary, actress, martial artist and filmmaker Maria Tran (Enter The Dojo, Gaffa, Hong Kong Shogun) is also tacking on a feature-film adaptation of her decorated 2013 action short, Hit Girls, penning the script with screenwriter Elizabeth H. Vu (Mr. Ghost, The Perception). The announcement comes five years since Tran headlined the award-winning short with actress and martial arts star JuJu Chan, which she also directed with film partner and co-helmer Adrian Castro. Tran took to social media on Monday to break the news posting the following along with a photo: “| HIT GIRLS | The joy! When you are in the office and your writers are all collaborating on the same project (in other spaces) and you are just so impatient to see how the story pans out! It’s been so much fun fleshing this one out. More than 5 years ago […]
Believe it or not, we’re coming down the wire with the Hit Lists of 2017! December 4 will be the last entry before I recommence things in January. Until then, I am also preparing content for the next several weeks in which I discuss upcoming films to look out for in 2018, so stick around for those as well. For now though, it’s business as usual for The Hit List assembling the week’s stunt and demo reels and projects. Stuntman, actor and filmmaker Diego Ramiro gives us an impressive showing this week with an spirited action comedy reel showcasing just what a versatile talent he is. He kicks off this week’s playlist with more reels by Kimberly Root, Andrew Nadanyi, Valisa Tate, Adam Carson, Marina Volkova, Geoffrey Boggs, Molly Thomas, Felix Cortes, Jeffrey Mayfield, Trevor de Groot and Chad Riley. It’s time for some trailer gems and thus, the past […]
The folks over at Fideo Films and Jusmedia in Australia are back at it with the latest public release of the new shortfilm follow-up, Enter The Dojo 2. Not to be confused with actor Matt Page’s similarly named comedic webseries, this one is the second in an on-going short miniseries from producer and actress Maria Tran, and writer and director Adrian Castro, the same duo that brought you shortfilm hits such as, Hit Girls and Gaffa. Featuring fight choreography by Trung Ly, Enter The Dojo originally started off as a titular “test shoot” that unveiled online roughly a year and a half ago with a story filled with amazing physical kung fu comedy and over-the-top gags, featuring Tran as a master martial arts sensei forced to discipline bumbling thugs that cross her path. Both shorts are available for viewing, with part two in the embed below, also starring actors Ian […]
Just in time for Halloween, the creative minds behind the early 2013 indie action Girls With Guns martial arts comedy short, Hit Girls have switched gears with their new digital sci-fi action horror webseries, Hidden Peaks. The new webseries began production in early 2012 from a story and screenplay from lead actor Laurent Boiteux who takes you in a world flooded in deapair, where the guns are big, but the screams get bigger, and only a handful of armed survivors must solve the mystery behind this new age of darkness, if they can stay alive long enough. The official first teaser aired on the Fideo Films YouTube channel in November of last year, then joined earlier this year by a two behind the scenes featurettes in March and April with the cast and crew, including cinematographer/producer, Justin Gong. A second trailer was posted online this week, which you can view […]
