Arena Wars opens in North America on June 25 from Gravitas Ventures. It’s admirable that there are still directors out there keen on committing themselves to action cinema nostalgia. As always though, it’s a crapshoot each time and particularly when it comes to the dystopian death game genre. To that end, there are plenty of examples with tons of positives to pull from depending on your tastes. Films like The Running Man, the Battle Royale movies, The Hunger Games films, the Jason Statham-led Death Race, and even The Hunt are all terrific cases in point. Suffice it to say, there are others that fare even less. Dallas Jackson’s more grounded The System is probably the best title in this category I’ve seen as recently as last year, and that’s coming off of covering the gravely subpar U.K. indie, Exiled: The Chosen Ones. Although Brandon Slagle’s Arena Wars fares a wee […]
The official trailer arrived on Wednesday for The Flood, the new survival thriller from Breakout and Battle For Saipan director Brandon Slagle. Nicky Whelan, Casper Van Dien, and Louis Mandylor lead the cast along with Ryan Francis, Randy Waye and Kim DeLonghi. When a massive hurricane hits Louisiana, a group of prisoners and their security officers must seek shelter in a local prison. With the flood waters rising and a daring jailbreak ensuing, the trapped group discover an even greater threat than the rising water level — a relentless pack of giant hungry alligators. Lionsgate will release The Flood in theaters and on VOD July 14. Check out the trailer!
First look stills are now making the rounds for Frost, the new thriller from director Brandon Slagle (Crossbreed, Attack Of The Unknown). Cleopatra Entertainment is announcing picture wrap following a 2020 Winter shoot on location in the San Bernardino mountains in southern California, with an October 11 release following its forthcoming festival run. Slagle directs from a screenplay storied by James Cullen Bressack penned by Robert Thompson. The film stars Vernon Wells (Mad Max II: The Road Warrior, Commando), Devanny Pinn (The Dawn, Crossbreed) and Venus DeMilo Thomas (Life, Sister Sister), and tells the story of a young woman and her estranged father who have to fight to survive after being stranded on a remote mountainside during a winter storm. Bressack recently wrapped production on upcoming Glen Danzig film Death Rider In The House Of Vampires. A full motion picture soundtrack for Frost is scheduled for both the CD and […]
Douglas Tait, Jolene Andersen and Richard Grieco headline the story of a Los Angeles SWAT team thrown head-first into a fight for survival against the backdrop of an alien invasion in Attack Of The Unknown, the latest directorial work of Crossbreed and Escape From Ensenada helmer Brandon Slagle. An undercover bust explodes into a major gun battle as Maddox (Tait) and Vernon (Grieco) lead the incursion to catch elusive crime boss Hades (Robert LaSardo). Despite losing one of their own and wrangling with the FBI, the bust is a success, though as the story unfolds, the Feds receive tips regarding threats on Hades’s life and Tait and his team are assigned to transport him to County jail for heavier supervision. The job is a less-than smooth one as Tait, Vernon and the rest of the team are left stranded with their vehicle disabled and the arrival of a mothership looming […]
Nostalgic 90s-tinged action seems to be the way to go for some types. It has its moments, sure – a point made all the more clear for some who’ve seen Brandon Slagle’s 2018 actioner, Escape From Ensenada. I’ll have my own opinions on that film when I’ve seen it. In the meantime, he’s taking that same audience into the far reaches of space with Uncork’d Entertainment’s Crossbreed, instantly sharing his keenness on that 90s TV and film lore with the kind direct-to-video sci-fi that’ll have you sifting for your TV Guide to look up when Time Trax and Andromeda are coming on. It’s 2060 when mankind is faced with a post-World War 3 America following an intergalactic fracas with an alien race known as the “sharak-ti”, and somehow, Vernon Wells has outlived the rest of us? Anyway, we begin with dogfight in space with Wells in the role of Murphy, […]
Escape From Ensenada helmer Brandon Slagle’s latest sci-fi thriller, Crossbreed, has a trailer and several images circulating as of last week. The film appears to be getting a 2018 release hailing a cast that enlists actress Devanny Pinn as the titular alien biological weapon seen as the latest central threat to mankind thanks in part to some skullduggery on the count of corrupt humans. Plot twists and such! In the near future, the President of the New United States of America hires a team of military veterans to retrieve a biological alien weapon from a top secret research facility orbiting the Earth. The mission goes awry when it is revealed that the facility is being maintained by a double agent with allegiance both to the President as well as alien arms dealers. Facing an immeasurable task, team leader Adam “Boss” Ryker must face not only the heavily-armed personnel guarding the […]
