However, martial arts film fans were finally graced with the chance to catch what the fuss was all about with writer and filmmaker João Paulo Andrade‘s shortfilm debut, O Amuleto do Dragão (The Amulet Of The Dragon). Brazil-based O2 Filmes and martial arts film group, Action Kung Fu, with co-producer and fight choreographer Gutemberg Lins and producer Fernando Tiezzi are behind the project, which has since been billed as the first-ever “100% Brazilian Martial Arts Movie”. The start of the new year gave way for independent filmmaker and actor Caio Fontes to create simple, linear and action-driven story to fortify his own efforts to popularize the action genre more in his native Brazil. That movement came in the form of his February shortfilm, Stray, and the positive reactions it drew ultimately inspired Fontes and his team over at Colete Films to expand on the backstory for a larger scope, now leaving us the first of two volumes for the two-part prequel, Alpha. Fontes returns to precede his first role in Stray as a member of an elite team of clandestine mercenaries, with both the first and second volume aimed at highlighting the moments leading up to the very turning point that ends where Stray begins. Independent filmmaker, martial artist and actor Caio Fontes has something truly special in the making this year with his Brazil-based indie platform, Colete Films. If you’ve seen their most recent action short, Stray, you could deem it as a worthy concept for something much larger in scale, and if I may say so myself, it is. And I personally hope this concept lends itself to something of a feature in due time.For now though, it’s all about the love of the craft, as is the nature of independent filmmaking with small budgets and a handful of resources to help make an idea work. Personally, I do not know enough about the current state of Brazil’s film scene. However, I am aware that as far as the action films go, the genre does tend to flourish in some parts of the world more than others. Such was the case for Brazil-based independent filmmaker, actor and Filipino Martial Arts practioner Caio Fontes whose own realization of this came almost a year ago as he stepped away from Business Development before beginning his own efforts on YouTube to gain recognition as an action filmmaker, and more importantly, to join the fray among a select handful of other action filmmakers and change the trend.
