Cedric Nicolas-Troyan’s The Huntsman: Winter’s War didn’t do so well at the box office. I haven’t been able to catch it myself though hopefully this won’t affect his prospects for the Highlander remake. I think it’s become quite remarkable that folk tales have become such a staple for bold storytelling. Director Cedric Nicolas Troyan’s The Huntsman: Winter’s War certainly gives us plenty of that with its edgier approach following up on its Snow White roots and reintroducing us to actor Chris Hemsworth in an origin tale of how he became the titular character before then. Add Charlize Theron, Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain into the mix and what we get is a fantastic and edgy action adventure that bends the rules on childrens’ folklore for epic storytelling. It ain’t exactly R-rated, but Hemsworth fans and those fond of his Mjolnir-wielding ways as Thor will find themselves in good company when the film releases this April. Today, we get a full on trailer and not for nothing either with sweeping views of a kingdom rife with luster and beauty, suddenly overcome by looming darkness and evil by two evil sisters, and with Chris Hemsworth and Jessica Chastain as our only hope for salvation; considering how action-packed and electrifying it looks, I’d say I’m pretty sold on this. There’s no question that derivative interpretations of childhood classics have just as much of an effect as most other adaptations of certain properties. Thus, Snow White & The Huntsman surely had its day in 2012 from director Rupert Sanders with actress Kristen Stewart in the title role and actor Chris Hemsworth co-starring opposite Charlize Theron. In 1986, you likely wouldn’t have guessed that director Russell Mulcahy’s fantasy swordplay actioner, Highlander, would live to see a cult following after earning low numbers upon its release. Fortunately however, it accomplished just that, with the addition of television shows and enough continual theatrical flops that would make one wonder just why these films were ever made. Needless to say, while the concept of immortals doing battle throughout time is still a wonderful concept to play with, it is also one that has drawn a huge fanbase.
