Li Yuhe’s rural crime comedy, Absurd Accident, was certainly fun to take in this past summer. Cheng Cheng Films is finally sending out announcements this week going forward with a November 20 release in the U.S. on DVD, and I highly guarantee it’ll be a worthwhile treat to enjoy at home.
Culminating an intricately woven plot from debut writer/director Li Yuhe, Absurd Accident has plenty going for itself in the unimaginable, silly and darkly comedic as intended. The story itself uses the zig-zag routine, challenging you to follow along with each chapter as it unfolds with each terrible decision, plot twist and point of calamity.
Li Yuhe’s feature debut Absurd Accident, drew some enthused reactions from critics and also tended to festival crowds in Shanghai and parts of the U.S.. Cheng Cheng Films is proudly taking the mantle for its U.S. distribution with a release now set for July 18 on Amazon Prime Video and VoD platforms wherever it’s made available.
Multi-nominated actor-turned-director Matt Wu became a favorite in 2014 at Busan with his award-winning short, Stairway. He then followed suit with 2016 feature debut, One Night Only, which sparked rounds of critical acclaim upon its summer release.
Absurd Accident is executive produced by Derek Yee with a cast that enlists Xixu Chen, Ye Gao, Suxi Ren, Bo Dong and Yunfei Lou.
Kevin Tsai’s career in film isn’t really huge though it extends as far back as the early 90s having written the action-packed Jet Li hit, Fong Sai Yuk. That was an impressive find as I was looking him up amid the current promotion of his debut fantasy comedy, Didi’s Dreams which has a current limited theatrical running in North America from Cheng Cheng Films.
The story follows Gao Ye (Aaron Kwok), a gambling addict who has lost all his inherited fortune and loved ones, as he tricks a beautiful prostitute Momo (Yang Zishan) into throwing her savings on all kinds of gambling games in Bangkok’s streets, hoping the money they win will make himself rich again. But things immediately spin wildly out of control as they find themselves fallen into a bigger scheme set up by the city’s underground. It is also revealed that Momo actually has always been behind something unknown to Gao Ye. The two wait anxiously as the night falls not knowing if they will survive to see another sunrise.
