Already hitting the trades and genre film forums, a first look is already out and about with featured actor Daniel Bernhardt (John Wick, Nobody, Skylines) for Raven Banner’s Deathstalker. The label launched world sales at the Marché du Film over the weekend with cameras currently rolling in Canada. A reboot of the late Roger Corman’s cult Sword & Sorcery film franchise, Bernhardt stars as the titular character revised by writer and director Steven Kostanski (The Void, PG: Psycho Goreman). Bernhardt portrays the barbarian who finds himself cursed by a magical talisman that draws him into conflict with a malevolent wizard and a clan of monstrous assassins. Corman’s films capitalized on the 80s fan fervor of films like John Milius’ Conan the Barbarian, with a similar collision of pulp fantasy and lurid excess. Kostanski’s new vision promises a greater emphasis on exploring the series’ fantasy setting and filling it with monsters […]
If you follow film fandom or “Action Twitter” or anything relevant to actor and action star Daniel Bernhardt, you’ve probably went about as nuts as everyone else when you read the Screendaily exclusive reporting plans to reboot 80s cult sword-and-sorcery thriller, Deathstalker. There are four of these films in existence stemming from the 1983 installment, capitalizing off of successes like the Conan films and Red Sonja with a similar allure. The first, produced by Roger Corman among others and starring Rick Hill, sees the titular warrior banding together with several other heroes ahead of a tournament hosted by a wicked sorceror in a seedy plot to retain power. That film is now getting a facelift at the behest of PG: Psycho Goreman director Steven Kostanski who will also pen the script. Bernhardt, a longstanding name in the genre with credits stretching back to the DTV action era and as of […]
Filmmaker Jesse V. Johnson has certainly lived up to the hype as one of the most prominent action genre directors working today; Frankly, I’m almost curious to see how well he would bode in the horror or sci-fi genres. To this end, he’s also one of the most consistent when it comes to his distinctive style at times, and an adherence to bygone cinema, history and philosophy plays well here, especially with his most recent World War II thriller drama, Hell Hath No Fury. The film sets sail at the tail-end of the war where we meet Marie (Nina Bergman), the former lover of an elite Nazi guardsman named Von Bruckner (Daniel Bernhardt). In the span of three years and with France gaining its freedom with remnants of Hitler’s army vacating, Marie finds herself in not-so-cozy bearings after spending three years in prison with her headshaven and a swastika painted […]
Well Go USA is proudly releasing Jesse V. Johnson’s latest period WWII thriller, Hell Hath No Fury, on Blu-Ray and DVD from December 21. Actress, singer/songwriter and model Nina Bergman (Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 (VG), Assassin X, The Wayshower) headlines the new film with a cast that also lists Daniel Bernhardt (The Matrix franchise, John Wick, Atomic Blonde), Louis Mandylor (The Debt Collector, My Big Fat Greek Wedding I and II), Timothy V. Murphy (“Snowpiercer,” “Sons of Anarchy”), former French Foreign Legion Special Forces soldier and knife-fighting technician Dominiquie Vandenberg (Triple Threat, The Mercenary, Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York) and Josef Cannon (Helsing University). HELL HATH NO FURY is the story of one woman who single-handedly takes on the might of the German war machine, the French resistance, and a band of US infantrymen. Branded a traitor by her countrymen, French national Marie DuJardin is rescued by American soldiers on one condition: to survive, she must lead […]
Jesse V. Johnson loves cinema. Working in various levels of film productions since the early 1990s, the English-born filmmaker first made his name as a stunt performer working on such high profile projects as the original TOTAL RECALL, STARSHIP TROOPERS, WAR OF THE WORLDS, and dozens more. This led to Johnson being a stunt coordinator, a second unit director, and eventually an accomplished feature director. Staying true to his stunt background, the films Johnson has directed are action-packed affairs such as THE DEBT COLLECTOR, TRIPLE THREAT, and AVENGEMENT (to name just a few) that value practical effects and physical performers more than expensive CGI-laden spectacle. And throughout his constant climb to get where he is today, recognized as one of the strongest voices in action filmmaking among people who truly value that genre, he has never lost that love of cinema. This fact is abundantly clear when looking at his […]
In the waning days of World War Two, a small group of American soldiers, led by the cunning Major Maitland, are heading to a forgotten graveyard in the French countryside. With them is Marie, recently freed from a Nazi prison but still labeled a German sympathizer by her fellow French countrymen. Maitland and his men pulled her from an angry mob due to assurances that she would lead them to a cache of stolen Nazi gold that was left hidden by her and her former lover, a member of Hitler’s elite guard named “Von Bruckner.” What none of them realize is that Von Bruckner is abandoning Germany’s losing war effort; with plans to head overseas with his loyal followers. So, he is also making his way to that same graveyard in hopes of retrieving the gold and when he arrives with his squad it will set off a bloody and […]
Well Go USA is placing its feet firmly in a November 5 select theatrical release for World War II action thriller, Hell Hath No Fury. The Planos, Texas-based firm acquired the title on Friday, signaling its reunion with stuntman-cum-filmmaker Jesse V. Johnson (Avengement, The Debt Collector, Well Go USA’s Triple Threat). Headlined by Nina Bergman (Doom: Annihilation, Assassin X, video game Call of Duty: Black Ops 4), Hell Hath No Fury, according to the announcement “is at its essence a story about one woman who single-handedly takes on the might of the German war machine, a ragtag unit of US infantrymen, and the likes of the French resistance as each faction searches for a cache of gold stolen by the Nazis.” “We are thrilled to once again be working with Jesse, who has long been known both for his action chops and his knack for finding new stories nestled amongst oft-portrayed […]
2020 is officially a banner year for hybrid sci-fi action and martial arts films between at least three distinct new film releases, one namely being Liam O’Donnell’s new sci-fi thriller, Skylin3s – aptly coined with the number three in its title. Long-billed as a crowning achievement for O’Donnell, the Skyline franchise serves thusfar as one of the more notable bookmarks for the fandom. The sequel’s festival premiere in 2016 with Beyond Skyline had audiences reveling with praise and galvanizing, much to the benefit of the 2010 inaugural, Skyline, which bodes more as hit-or-miss with some viewers. Point in fact, it would have been a risky bet to suggest the franchise could generate interest. O’Donnell, not to be outdone by the odds, came out of nowhere five years ago and dared to prove the naysayers different, and evidently, he did. How evident? Enter Skylin3s, third in line following directly from the […]
FrightFest’s virtual attendees are just days away from its closing premiere event for Liam O’Donnell’s new movie, Skylin3s. Third in line for a saga that’s made a resounding comeback from 2010 through 2017, Skylin3s bookends the current trilogy forthwith, starring Lindsey Morgan (Beyond Skyline, The 100) in what O’Donnell himself ascribes to as the first superhero movie of the franchise. When a virus threatens to turn the now earth-dwelling friendly alien hybrids against humans, Captain Rose Corley must lead a team of elite mercenaries on a mission to the alien world in order to save what’s left of humanity. Skylin3s is getting a select theatrical and on-demand release on December 18, 2020. In the meantime, you can also read more on the director’s thoughts by clicking here, and with any luck, I’ll be able to check in with more coverage on this film in the weeks and months ahead. Daniel Bernhardt is jacking back into the Matrix for the fourth installment which is back in production as of this summer after shutting down in March due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Cameras are rolling in Berlin and with Bernhardt back to reprise his role as Agent Johnson from 2003’s The Matrix Reloaded, rejoining Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss who headlined the initial Warner Bros. sci-fi action trilogy. Lilly Wachowski is back in the director’s chair minus sister, Lana; Both Wachowskis directed all three films to box office fruition, earning $1.6 billion dollars at the box office from 1999 to 2003, invigorating sci-fi fandom with graphic novel-style thrills and imagery, and cinematic action and kung fu thanks to the efforts of Master Yuen Woo-Ping’s stunt team. The film also marks a reuinion for Bernhardt who also starred opposite Reeves in the first installment of the current John Wick trilogy. Bernhardt’s credits […]

The 1990s were a great decade to be a martial arts gaming fan if you loved any and all things Mortal Kombat. Based on Midway’s long-running game franchise, the hit series Mortal Kombat Conquest served as a prequel of events leading up to the two feature films from New Line Cinema, arriving just in time when fans were still waiting for a third Mortal Kombat movie that seemed hopeful at the time. Sadly, there was never a third, and we are now even farther from the hopes of a feature-length reboot inspired by Kevin Tancharoen’s popular conceptual ‘Rebirth’ promo and subsequent ‘Legacy’ webseries from Machinima which is reportedly still on par for a third season. But don’t be too troubled, especially if you grew to enjoy ‘Conquest’ and long for that nostalgic feel once more, because the series is finally heading to DVD to help tie you over before then! […]
Promising a spectacular action packed revenge thriller, Deadline has reported that actor and martial arts action star, and The Hunger Games 2: Catching Fire co-star Daniel Bernhardt (Bloodsport 2, 3 and 4, The Cutter, Parker) has been added to the cast of the next Keanu Reeves-starring action vehicle, John Wick. Based on a screenplay by The Package scribe Mark Kolstad, the film features Reeves in the title role, following the story of a former hitman whose late wife’s dog is murdered by a thug and his friends who steal his 1969 Ford Mustang, leading Wick to a climatic showdown with the thug’s father, a Russian New York crime boss who makes Wick a target. Produced by Basil Ilwaynk and Mike Witherill, and executive produced by Reeves along with Kevin Scott Frakes and Raj Brinder Singh for Thunder Road Pictures and H & W Movie Partners, the New York-based production of […]
