Asian Film Strike on Twitter scored some curious eyes earlier this week with the teaser poster reveal for Dragon And Tiger Struggle. Gary Mak (Undying Heart, SDU: Sex Duties Unit) is set to the direct the pic which is on its way to production, according to the latest CCTV6 updates via YouTube. What’s more is on casting, presenting a bevy of talents listing Eric Tsang (The Adventurers, Golden Job), Andy On (Kung Fu League, A Witness Out Of The Blue), Ray Lui (Flash Point, Firestorm), Collin Chou (Flash Point, The Four), Shi Yanneng (Master Z: Ip Man Legacy, The Heart), Leung Kar Yan (Ip Man 3, Bloody Destiny), Danny Chan Kwok Kwan (Ip Man: The Finale) and Chen Zhi Hui (Saving General Yang, Jet Li’s Fearless). Plot and story details are unknown though the film is being billed as a wushu sports drama which, according to a general translation from […]
Christmas will undoubtedly come a bit earlier for Donnie Yen fans looking toward advance screenings this month for Wilson Yip’s Ip Man 4: The Finale. Expect some heavy-handed press by then with some of the film’s own stars touring select territories to promote the film, including the ‘Man’ himself in what he now elucidated will be his final kung fu movie according to his statements to South China Morning Post in the past week as of this article. Martial Arts master, Donnie Yen is back for the final installment of the Ip Man Universe franchise in Ip Man 4: The Finale, directed by Wilson Yip. Ip Man’s life remains unchanged after his wife’s death, but he and his son are slowly drifting apart. To seek a better future for his son, Ip Man decides to travel to the U.S. only to find the stable, peaceful life abroad is only skin […]
It’s taken a bit of time to come to, but the long-awaited U.S. release of Jeffrey Lau’s martial arts ensemble romp, Kung Fu League is officially gearing up for a Blu-ray Combo, DVD and Digital release on September 17 from Well Go USA. To update, we also have an official trailer now up and running since this article was published five days ago. Dennis To reprises his TV title performance from the ancillary feature, Ip Man: The Legend Is Born while Vincent Zhao returns in robe and queue as Wong Fei-Hung, Andy On steps up as Huo Yuanjia and Danny Chan relitigates the posterity of famed Bruce Lee persona, Chen Zhen. Leading the narrative is actor Ashin in a debut role as a shy man who summons the four legendary kung fu masters to help him fight for the woman he loves when his manager prevents him from ever reaching […]
Next month, QQ’s VIP subscribers will see a little more of actor Danny Chan in Fighting King Kong from director Ye Yongjian. Chan stars as Guo Zhengdong, a legendary hero bent on saving China and protecting Southern martial arts through learning a stronger style known as the “King Kong Walking Method”. Also starring are Jin Song who plays Chan’s shifu and Mo Meilin plays his father. Of course there’s no word yet on when or if this will get a legit release though with any luck it’ll be on Cinedigm’s radar or will pop-up on Tubi. Time will tell, for sure, and for those keeping up with Chan’s endeavors, the oft-Bruce Lee-personified screen star will topline next to Donnie Yen, Scott Adkins and Wu Yue in Wilson Yip’s Ip Man 4 this July. Christina Yi Liu contributed to this story. Hat tip to City On Fire for details.
They say “ask and you shall receive”… I opined on some thoughts back in Fall of 2013 over whether or not we deserved more Undisputed films shepherded by action star Scott Adkins at a time when fans were pining for a fourth stint at Boyka fanfare. My diatribe included a nod to the prospects of seeing the British cult film star join forces with the likes of Asian action film favorite, Donnie Yen, and in the time since then, they’ve teased a little here and there… And that was it by the time cameras rolled for the now fourth and final entry in Yen’s longstanding hit kung fu franchise exploring the life, times, mythological action and splendor of the Wing Chun master who would tend to his greatest-achieving student, Bruce Lee. Mandarin Motion Pictures will be obliging fans beginning this summer with a date pending. Ip Man (Donnie Yen) has […]
Notable Kung Fu Hustle producer Jeff Lau has since entered the fray with his next directorial feat, Kung Fu League. The project has been teases a headlining crowd of folkloric film heroes and now we have a first trailer this week. I gotta say, it’s wackier than I predicted and looks equally ridiculous, save for any hopes of this film being more film than fan service. I suppose it’s mainly because there isn’t a full synopsis available which is why this trailer is so daunting apart from what we already know. Alas, Vincent Zhao stakes his claim as the venerable Wong Fei Hung next to Andy On who takes the mantle as Huo Yuanjia, Danny Chan lending more to the typecast as Bruce Lee persona Chen Zhen, and Dennis To reprising as Ip Man from Herman Yau’s 2010 iteration of the Wing Chun grandmaster… As for this trailer, well… it’s […]
I won’t lie. I watched the pilot episode of Well Go USA’s latest release, Legend Of Bruce Lee, and it’s been weeks since I cared enough to look at the second episode and thereafter. The show runs enduringly high on drama and the dubbing is equally exasperating, but that doesn’t cancel out the fact that this show has an audience since its heyday in 2008. And Danny Chan? Well… he sells it, I suppose. Beyond that, if you’ve been watching the series and are keen on Well Go USA’s forthcoming third volume of the show, you’re more than welcome to set the date for October 3, 2017. I may just continue onward with it myself but I’m eager to hear your thoughts on the show myself, especially considering we’re just days away from the BH Tilt/WWE Studios release of Birth Of The Dragon. It’s a high time to be a […]
Perhaps no one is as lauded, both personally and professionally, than Bruce Lee (Li Xiao Long). Well, Jackie Chan is a close second but that’s not the focus of this review. Where should I start? I have many conflicting emotions writing this and I am sure there will be some people that will take my own informed opinions with a grain of salt. And you should. Because this review is my own, of course. Let’s start with the production. CCTV backed The Legend Of Bruce Lee. It’s video quality. Although it was filmed in 2008, I was disheartened of the low quality throughout the ten episodes in Volume 1. Made for several million dollars for 50 episodes and Executive Produced by Bruce’s daughter, Shannon, I felt that the overall vision was amateurish but had promise. Yet, seeing a young Bruce Lee (Danny Chan) along with terrible and distracting English dubbing […]
Be on the look out for former Wushu athlete-turned rising action star Max Zhang in the year ahead. He’s made a killing in Soi Cheang’s S.P.L. 2: A Time For Consequences and Wilson Yip’s Ip Man 3, the latter for which its franchise is now aiming at a spin-off for the role he played opposite leading man Donnie Yen, and will soon be seen in Fruit Chan’s Made In Kowloon, and Jonathan Li’s The Brink. That’s probably more than enough for you at this point while, suffice it to say, it doesn’t end there, and with news on a new $17 million dollar action thriller on the horizon from director Jeffrey Lau (Metallic Attraction: Kung Fu Cyborg, A Chinese Odyssey trilogy) for Ten-Ton Assassin. Cameras reportedly begin rolling in March with Zhang and real-life wife, actress Ada Choi starring as a divorced couple who reunite to look for their kidnapped son. […]
I remember first seeing the trailer to the CCTV-1 broadcast of the Shannon Lee produced series, The Legend Of Bruce Lee a bit less than a decade ago. Having already been a fan of director Rob Cohen’s Hollywood treatment, I wasn’t too impressed and I guess because it felt a bit like excess for there to be another pseudo-fictional telling of the life and legend of the Jeet Kune Do founder and martial arts film star. I think nowadays, however, my perspective has changed a bit since then and particularly considering that lead actor Danny Chan reprised the role opposite Donnie Yen in the hit film, Ip Man 3, it’s understandable that fans would probably take a ceremonial liking to this show which casts a number of well-knowns and through a showcase of various styles of martial arts to interpret how Lee adapts to win his battles. It’s a martial […]
If you have any doubts that any actor could revive a once-living cinematic legend on screen like the incomparable Bruce Lee, you’re probably right. Nonetheless and actor Philip Ng’s own prospects notwithstanding with respect to the current production of Bruce Lee biopic, Birth Of The Dragon, certainly bearing the late martial arts master’s image is a benefit for actor Danny Chan Kwok-Kwan who is reprising him as a younger version of the real-life star to be in Wilson Yip‘s latest, Ip Man 3. It’ll notably be the third time Chan has portrayed Bruce Lee’s persona in some capacity following the 2008 TV series, The Legend Of Bruce Lee and Stephen Chow’s 2004 sports comedy, Shaolin Soccer as a Game Of Death-inspired character. As the saying goes – if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Check out Chan winning over the camera lens as the young and ambitious once and future […]
Look no further than folks like action star, martial artist and stuntman Tiger Chen who has cut his teeth in the industry for quite some time. Most prominently, working under Yuen Woo-Ping for as long as he has even allowed him to stake a claim in one of his first lead roles in the last several years, namely Keanu Reeves’ prominent directorial debut, Man Of Tai Chi in which he portrayed a troubled martial artist forced to come to terms with the dark side of his fighting skills. It was a performance I rather enjoyed – a little reserved but still showed Chen‘s range to a noticable degree, and it suitably won’t hurt to see him in another role after that. Since then he’s had a few projects in store but now that the pot is brewing at AFM this week, Variety brings news of Chen’s latest attachement to the […]
