Nate Parker (The Birth Of A Nation) is set to begin production on Vancover, B.C.-based BRON’s newest drama, Solitary, starting next week. BAFTA, Emmy and Golden Globe nominee David Oyelowo (Selma) leads the cast along with Olivia Washington (The Butler), Emmy award winner Barry Pepper (Saving Private Ryan) and Jimmie Fails (The Last Black Man in San Francisco). In Solitary, Oyewolo plays a man who struggles to matriculate back into society after enduring seven years of wrongful imprisonment in solitary confinement. Irony kicks in upon realizing that self-isolation is the new normal, as he tries to rebuild a life with his fiancé (Washington) and son, while plagued by the deep-seated trauma which creates unimaginable danger for both him, and the family he’s battling to protect. Solitary marks the latest project from BRON in what they deem as “their continuing mission to bring socially conscious and underrepresented stories to the forefront […]
A week since Jacob Aaron Estes’ Sundance entry landed a release base from Blumhouse, OTL Releasing and Briarcliff, suspense thriller Don’t Let Go unveiled its official trailer on Tuesday. After Detective Jack Radcliff’s (David Oyelowo) family appears to be victim of a mysterious murder, he receives a startling phone call from his niece (Storm Reid), seemingly from the past. Now Jack must race to unravel a mystery to prevent a death that has already happened. I gotta say…that summary had me doing a double-take, twice! Also starring are Mykelti Williamson and Brian Tyree Henry. opens in theaters August 30!
Amazon Studios rolled out their first official trailer in fine form for Nash Edgerton’s new road action comedy, Gringo. David Oyewolo leads and teases a hilarious fish-out-of-water narrative for this one with actress Charlize Theron milking the heck out of another boss role alongside Joel Edgerton fetching his best American accent to date. Mild-mannered pharmaceutical company executive Harold Soyinka (David Oyelowo) takes a business trip from Chicago to Mexico with his cutthroat bosses Richard (Joel Edgerton) and Elaine (Charlize Theron). At the company’s Mexican lab, Richard orders manager Sanchez (Hernán Mendoza) to stop selling the bioengineered marijuana product Cannabax to a brutal, Beatles-loving cartel kingpin known as The Black Panther. Meanwhile, straight-arrow Harold learns he’ll be out of a job as soon as Richard and Elaine sell their newly cleaned-up company to a conglomerate. And when he turns to his wife Bonnie (Thandie Newton) back home for comfort, she confesses […]
STX Entertainment has a few titles in its catalogue that I’m very much into. This week they’re in Cannes making their agenda clear while currently underway in Mexico City filming an unofficially titled action comedy in partnership with Amazon Studios. The film, unofficially presented at CinemaCon back in March as American Express, sees actor David Oyewolo (Selma, Captive, Nina) in the role of Harold Soyinka, a newly married, mild-mannered American businessman whose prospects in the pharmaceutical field turn null and void when he ends up stranded South of the border with a price on his head, and questions about the life he had which never existed. Veteran stunt professional and producer Nash Edgerton makes his sophomore directorial offering from a script by producer Anthony Tambakis and Matt Stone with actresses Amanda Seyfried, Charlize Theron and Thandie Newton, and actors Yul Vazquez and Hardcore Henry co-star Sharlto Copley also starring. Amazon […]
