The hard work of making an action film paid off tenfold for director Christopher Sheffield whose second feature, Split Lip is now available on Amazon Prime. Split Lip hails from Sheffield’s Persephone Productions independent banner with actress Dorée Seay starring as an assassin whose organization turns on her after a botched hit job. You can read my review here for the specifics, but I can certainly attest that Seay puts on a worthy show in her newest screen outing for someone who only took one capoeira lesson years earlier. I interviewed her late last year where she discussed the process and working with Sheffield and his dedicated team and you can read more on that here as well. Also starring are Maryam Cné, Chris Labadie and DeJean Brown.
Nurtured from a concept eight years in the making from its previous life as a webseries, Split Lip marks a hopeful new milestone for writer and director Chris Sheffield and actress Dorée Seay. For a good bulk of the film, there are some strong, solid performances and writing, and direction overall. There’s a mythology here that feels fresh, and Seay’s own screen presence makes it all the more rewarding. The badass cadre of assassins in Split Lip, including Eli Godfrey’s most chilling role of the pack – a psychopathic masked killer named “Ghetty”, foundates an almost tournament-like action thriller in which Seay truly holds her own action star weight despite having next-to-zero experience. Encompassing the opener of Split Lip is a seething tone-setter inaugurated by Karlton, played by Dejean Brown. Underworld assassin politics set the pace for our thriller as we meet Set (Seay), a hardened life-long assassin who finds […]
Director Chris Sheffield’s new feature film, Split Lip, is officially poised for a limited theatrical run at the Laemmle’s Glendale Theater in Glendale, California between January 18 through 24. The film’s completion and 2019 premiere mark another career milestone achievement for Sheffield since birthing the project as a webseries in 2011 prior to two Indiegogo campaigns in 2015 and 2016. Hailing from Sheffield’s Persephone Productions banner actress Dorée Seay leads from a script by Sheffield who also produces. Sheffield credits list a raft of short films and TV projects before and following his 2015 feature debut, Run For Your Life, and has also garnered an audience with his recent fan film series on YouTube, Gotham Nights, focusing on the nighttime crimefighting chronicles of Batgirl, played by actress Heather Wake. In the underground world of contract killers, mistakes cannot be tolerated. Set, a young brutal fighter with an icy exterior, (played […]
Our coverage continues this week for director Christopher Sheffield’s new movie, Split Lip. It’s the latest major move for actress Dorèe Seay who happens to be a woman of many talents, loves cinema, and especially loves that of a Korean variety (fun fact: I just finished harping on Instagram recently about how much I would love to see Jung Doo-Hong collaborate with action stars Scott Adkins and Bruce Khan and so you can imagine my elation when I read her answers this week while drafting.) Seay talks aplenty here about her role in Split Lip as Set, a hitwoman on the run from her employer following a botched hit job. She also discusses preparing for the role and approaching its dramatic and physical aspects, and essentially getting to work with a director with whom she clicks really well – that’s usually the case we can all imagine or hope for […]
