• THE BLACK BUTTERFLY• DEATH VALLEY• VENGEANCE OF A SNOW GIRL• Extras• Conclusion Legendary director Lo Wei is front and center once more for another dose of classic Shaw Brothers action by way of Eureka Entertainment with Martial Law: Lo Wei’s Wuxia World. The bundle herein lends restored classics including The Black Butterfly (1968), Death Valley (1968), and Vengeance Of A Snow Girl (1971), along with a lean addition of extras to boot. The bundle also serves up an ample grouping of titles in which Lo himself also makes appearances. In The Black Butterfly, he plays Gai Tian Lui, the sinister head of Five Devil Rock whose collection of wealth is the latest ensnared by The Black Butterfly, a thief who haunts the night stealing from the rich to give to the poor. Efforts to investigate who the mysterious figure is and their whereabouts lead to a remote tavern run […]

The Adventurers arrives on Limited Edition Blu-Ray on April 29 from Eureka Entertainment. Pre-orders are now up and running at MVD Shop. The late Ringo Lam remains one of the biggest core figures in Hong Kong cinema today. A notable figure among a roster of signaling Hong Kong’s “new wave,” Lam is best known for flourishing on the big screen with spells of modern crime dramas and thrillers, including his 1995 film, The Adventurers. A lush rice field sets the stage for a prologue flashing back to 1975 as we witness the brutality of the Khmer Rouge in a helpless Cambodian village. The explosive backstory anchors the film’s introduction into the story of a much-older Wai Lok-yan (Andy Lau), a Thai Air Force pilot who lands the opportunity of a lifetime to avenge the murder of his family. His target? A CIA turncoat named Ray (Paul Chun) who made billions […]
Hiroyuki Sanada, Hiroko Yakushimaru, Sonny Chiba, Etsuko Shihomi and more star in this incredible blockbuster classic from Eureka Entertainment!
Eureka Entertainment’s Running On Karma arrives on Blu-Ray on January 28. Order it today at the MVD Shop. Johnnie To and Wai Ka-fai’s Running On Karma hit me differently twenty years ago, so I wasn’t too keen on it. Nowadays my mind is more open to different types of films in the field I cover, and I’ve come to realize that it’s a film that holds a little something for several kinds of audiences. Andy Lau wears an albeit convincing muscle suit in his second role after donning a similar suit for a portly character in Love On A Diet, a 2001 rom-com from the same directing duo. The muscular build for the role Lau plays this time around takes a life on its own as an aspect to the inherently transformative nature of the story To and Wai proffer to viewers. The long and short? Lau stars along with […]
Believe me, if I could make a list of home releases to get hyped up for as I did for the New Year theatrical ones, I would. There’s gonna be plenty to come moving forward, and thanks in particular to the success and progress of Eureka’s North American expansion in the past year with loads of niche classics in its library. Their latest comes in a two-pack tribute to legendary auteur Chang Cheh with The Daredevils and Ode To Gallantry, set to arrive on limited edition Blu-Ray in March. Eureka’s announcement on Tuesday makes clear just what’s to come as well, including multiple film audio tracks as well as commentaries by in-house voices Frank Djeng, Mike Leeder and Arne Venema, along with Michael Worth who of late has become the face of all things Bruceploitation with the magnificent work he’s done to revive the post-Bruce Lee wave of bygone martial […]
Hiroko Yakushimaru, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Sonny Chiba lead the cast of the legendary samurai classic!
Celebrated television veteran Patrick Tam has only directed a small number of films throughout his career, which spans close to half a century. He’s been a filmmaker in several aspects of the word, and this is undoubtedly signified on one of his earliest pieces, the 1980 wuxia action drama, The Sword. Lee Mak-Yin (Adam Cheng) is a noble, lone swordsman who has studied martial arts and pugilism under a revered master. He is now on a journey to find a particular master with whom he can share a duel, in order to gauge his own skills and possibly complete his training. Along the way, he meets a rambunctious young woman named Ying-Chi (Jade Hsu) who herself is in pursuit of an enemy one evening. After a brief scrimmage, Ying-Chi reluctantly joins Mak-Yin on their journey together, arriving at an inn where Mak-Yin just happens to bump into Siu-Yiu (Jo Jo […]
Johnnie To and Wai Ka-Fai’s 2003 hit film, Running On Karma, is coming to the U.S. on Blu-Ray re-release on January 28. Rolling out through Eureka Entertainment’s Masters Of Cinema line, the film will come in the form of a Limited Edition Blu-Ray package with 2000 copies (per territory), exclusively featuring an O-card slipcase. A lot has happened in the last two decades since this title, and I’m old enough to remember that Asian news outlets and adjacent websites like this one picked up on word of a sequel that was in the works that would have also starred Jacky Heung (100 Yards). Eventually Heung and To did collaborate on one other fantastic venture which managed to pull off a North American festival premiere. It really has been that long, though, that it feels like a Running On Karma sequel would hardly happening at all. I’m open to be proven […]
At times like this I really miss websites like HKFlix, a now-defunct online DVD retailer through which I would continue to discover old kung fu classics in the aftermath of the 90s Hong Kong crossover success of the likes of Jackie Chan and Jet Li. Cheong Chang-hwa’s memorable classic, Broken Oath, was certainly one of them, and remained intangible to me only until now with its Special Edition release on Blu-Ray from Eureka Entertainment. The long-and-short of the 1977 flick though sees screen legend Angela Mao in the role of Jie Lian, who findself her exiled from the Buddhist monastery where she was raised, due to her belligerent nature. After learning the truth about her past, and with the help of her godmother and a wily pickpocket, Jie Lian sets out to avenge her late mother’s wrongful imprisonment at the hands of a quartet of four assassins who murdered her […]

Jeong Chang-hwa’s 1977 Golden Harvest actioner, Broken Oath, was officially announced on Thursday with details pertinent to its upcoming Fall release on Blu-Ray. Eureka Entertainment is rolling out the Angela Mao-led martial arts classic on October 22 for its worldwide debut on Blu-ray from a brand new 2K restoration. A Hong Kong take on Japan’s Lady Snowblood, Broken Oath is an action-packed tale of righteous vengeance directed by Jeong Chang-hwa (King Boxer) and starring the first lady of kung fu cinema: the inimitable Angela Mao! Orphaned and angry, Lotus (Mao) is raised by Buddhist nuns before she is exiled for her violent ways – and skipping classes to improve her martial arts skills. Finding herself alone in the world, she quickly comes to discover the truth of her past: that her father was once a respected member of the Imperial Court who was murdered in cold blood, and that her […]
