Eureka Entertainment is the latest banner to carry the mantle for director Daniel Lee’s 1996 action sci-fi, Black Mask. The release marks the latest since the film’s transition to overseas markets, with U.S. labels Artisan Entertainment and Distant Horizon nabbing the title for its own remixed version a few years later. Based on a 1991 manhua by Pang Chi-Ming and Li Chi-Tat, the Jet Li starrer centers on the former member of a clandestine unit, once subject to a government experiment to create supersoldiers. Tsui-chik (Li), formerly of Squad 701, maintains a low profile as a librarian who spends his time buried in books. He gets along with his co-workers, and his best friend is Shek (Lau Ching-wan), a Hong Kong Inspector who oftentimes finds himself rescuing Tsui-chik from muggers and gangsters. Little does Tsui-chik know that his former team has resurfaced to cause a stir in the criminal underworld, […]

It’s a good time to be a Hong Kong cinema fan! Eureka Entertainment recently announced they will be releasing a Blu Ray of Yuen Woo-ping’s masterclass in madness, The Miracle Fighters, in the UK and the US on June 25th. Many people know Woo-ping as being the man responsible for the action in films like The Matrix, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Kill Bill but in the early 80’s he, with help from his brothers (aka The Yuen Clan), created some of the most innovative and inventive productions to come out of Hong Kong (including Donnie Yen’s first film, Drunken Tai Chi). To say that The Miracle Fighters has to be seen to be believed is an understatement. It’s off the wall in all the right ways During the Quing dynasty, marriage between Manchu and Han people is outlawed. When it is discovered that high-ranking official Kao Hsiung (Eddy Ko) has taken a Han wife, the Emperor […]

You can always count on niche banners to keep up the posterity on classics for physical media, including Eureka Entertainment which has been on a roll with a variety of genres in its output since 1981. Their latest brings forth martial arts cinema legend Ching Siu-Tung’s 1983 wuxia hit, Duel To The Death, which makes its return to physical media via the UK-based distributor and packed with a bevy of special features to make the purchase worth your while. Our own Vance Ang took to the dashboard for his own providential thoughts in a review he remarkably posted way ahead of this announcement. As genres, horror and thriller films manage to build up the tension, where a violent final act reaches a crescendo that will stay in the consciousness of the viewer for many hours, if not days or even weeks. Yet Duel is neither horror nor thriller. Evidently, there are some […]

Four years since stirring talk of sequels and a retirement, it wasn’t until the last few years we finally started learning what to make of all that noise with the announcement of the new movie, Re:Born. The messaging on that film’s development then slowly seuged from talk of his final film endeavor to something much more ceremonial in the cult action star’s return, which is understandably confusing. Forgiveable? Well, why not? A legendary soldier with a mysterious past decides to unleash his inner beast to stand up for what he cares about. RE:BORN marks the comeback of Tak Sakaguchi (Versus, Alive, Shinobi:Heart Under Blade), often described as one of the most under-rated actors in the action movie scene, and this film highlights him at his very best. Director Yuji Shimomura (Flash Point, Warriors Way, Gantz:Perfect Wars) teamed up with fight choreographyer Yoshitaka Inagawa, a former close combat instructor for U.S. […]
