The Princess Warrior is now available on VOD and Digital from Film Movement. It’s not every day Mongolian cinema gets to shine on the global stage. The Princess Warrior marks the latest effort in that regard from directing duo Baasanjargal Sambuu, and celebrated author Baatarsuren Shuudertsetseg whose 2017 novel serves as the basis for this action adventure. Actress Tsedoo Munkhbat takes on the title role of Mongol princess Khutulun, the classic heroine based on the real life legend which has seen her tale told through multiple mediums. The story chronicles her life from childhood and upbringing – named at the time as Ajurug – the only daughter to respected Mongol ruler, Khaidu (Gerelsukh Otgon). Khutulun is in constant competition with her patriarchal family setting as a girl expectant by her siblings to be a good wife and one day bear children to a worthy prince. As The Princess Warrior tells […]
578 Magnum is now available in on digital and VOD from Film Movement. As I wrote this review, I took the liberty of trying to ascertain just what the title of writer and director Luong Dinh Dung’s new movie, 578 Magnum, meant. Draw your own conclusions as you may – after a few Google searches here and there, I can see how it might have made sense to the director, although it still comes off as more of a hint of how lazy the writing was that went into this action thriller. Making his Western debut from a Vietnamese production in a lead role is actor Alexandre Nguyen who plays Hung, joined on screen by actress Thanh Thao in the role of his six-year old daughter, An. Hung shares a close relationship with his daughter while working as a container truck driver, and that relationship is sooner tested than preferred […]
An earlier version of this article was corrected and updated with release platform details. Director Luong Dinh Dung’s new action adventure, 578 Magnum is on the way to digital and VOD platforms this Friday from Film Movement. Several clips are making the rounds this week from a few news sites, and Film Combat Syndicate was granted the opportunity to share and exclusive clip of our own which you can view at the bottom of the page. The clip in question reveals a key moment in the film when Hung (Alexandre Nguyen) confronts a notorious gang while in search of his daughter, per the film’s synopsis. As the clip shows, the free-for-all explodes in a container yard with Hung standing against all odds until he’s cornered into fighting one of the film’s heaviest-hitting characters, played by martial artist Tuan Hac. 578 Magnum also stars Thanh Thao, Huoang Phuc and H’hen Hie, […]

Are You Lonesome Tonight? is now available on Digital and VOD from Film Movement Filmmaker Wen Shipei was only one feature project in, having directed the Camera d’Or-nominated crime thriller, Are You Lonesome Tonight? I don’t know what that means for a lot of other critics or folks in film circles but I think it speaks volumes of a director’s ability to tell a story and other prospects looking forward. This one is set in 1990s Guangzhou when Wang Xueming (Eddie Peng), an AC repairman accidentally hits a pedestrian and drives off. Racked with guilt, he slowly encroaches on the goings-on of his widow, Mrs. Liang (Sylvia Chang) in a friendship that slowly materializes between awkward passerby moments coupled with acts by design on Wang’s part. The film takes a stark turn about halfway in when truths begin to unravel about the fateful evening, as dauntless detective Chen (Wang Yanhui) […]
3:27pm EST: Updated to include Los Angeles screenings. Folks in New York City will have the chance to enjoy some classic Japanese cinema beginning this Friday at the Metrograph with three titles from December 16, and Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas on January 13 in Los Angeles, from director Hideo Gosha: Samurai Wolf, Samurai Wolf 2: Hell Cut, and Violent Streets. All three films will be subject to Blu-Ray disc releases in the new year as well. Metrograph presents Hideo Gosha X 3, beginning December 16 at Metrograph in Theater. One of the best-kept secrets of Japanese genre filmmaking in the 1960s and ’70s, Hideo Gosha began his studio career in 1964 and quickly emerged as a peerless specialist in chambara (samurai) films. A few years later, a contemporary twist on the chambara formula appeared in the form of the yakuza film, and Gosha proved equally adept with modern dress action. Whether the weapons of choice were […]
A new report at Variety has confirmed that Sarah Bolger’s new contained crime drama, A Good Woman Is Hard To Find, has been snagged by Film Movement for day-and-date releasing next year in North America. I wholly welcome this one as of the most intriguing and suspenseful features out of Fantasia this past summer and following its UK acquisition by Signature, it’s high time folks got a little something out of it in the states. So what are folks in for? Welp… for one we have actres Sarah Bolger leading the film. She plays a single mother of two, forced to do whatever it takes to survive when a small-time drug pusher invades her home in order to stash two stolen bags of cocaine. The film is directed by Road Games helmer Abner Pastoll, from a script by Ronan Blaney, and also stars Edward Hogg and Andrew Simpson. Peep my […]

Filmmaking multi-hyphenate Kitano Takeshi’s career hasn’t been all about putting hard-boiled violence and gangsters on screen. Surely enough though, when he does, it leaves a lasting impression that often feels someone enigmatic in its clear-cut resolve. You can’t really knock it in any case. It’s in your face and right down to a threatening cock-eyed stare with a barrel pointed right at you. And it’s tropes like that which highlight Kitano’s signature career in film, especially with the forthcoming US-bound Blu-Ray re-release of his 1989 directing debut, Violent Cop courtesy of Film Movement. SYNOPSIS: In one of his first dramatic roles, writer/director Takeshi “Beat” Kitano plays Detective Azuma, a hostile cop who’s not afraid of using violent means to catch his culprits. When his sister is kidnapped by a sadistic drug lord, Azuma’s Dirty Harry-style tactics escalate in his quest for vengeance. High quality HD transfers are to be expected […]
