Indeed, Oda Nobunaga is one of the most well-documented figures in world history. His is a recurring legacy in many a multimedia product in film and TV, and to no one’s surprise is source material rich with potential that filmmakers to this day are curious to adapt stories illustrating his life. Keishi Otomo, the mind behind adapting the biggest manga-inspired franchise of the past decade with Rurouni Kenshin, found a way in fitting fashion with his usual caliber of work alongside The Confidence Man JP trilogy and Parasyte adaptation screenwriter Ryota Kosawa. For this, it becomes a major point of interest as to how anyone interprets history, especially when obscurity befalls one half of the subject matter. Otomo’s 70th anniversary production for Toei, The Legend & Butterfly, makes a daring attempt to christen the genre once more with a peculiar revisit of the late legendary daimyo, born into power and […]
Toei spent a good many months running a campaign of behind-the-scenes reels to help palpitate audiences awaiting director Isao Yukisada’s latest, Revolver Lily. To that end, and with an official release date in Japan for August 11 now in place, the official trailer is finally here. 1924, Yuri, a former competent spy who murdered 57 people in the past is working as a madam of a small brothel. There she encounters a boy who holds a key to find missing cash of the Imperial Japanese Army. Now, 1000 soldiers are after them; can they possibly survive six days of this deadly warfare? Revolver Lily is based on Kyo Naguara’s Kodansha Bunko publication, and is produced by Toei’s Muneyuki Kii and Daisuke Takahashi. The film stars Haruka Ayase who recently appeared opposite Takuya Kimura in Keishi Otomo’s feudal epic, The Legend And Butterfly. She is joined by young actor Jinsei Hamura […]
Set to arrive just in time to celebrate the 70th anniversary in Toei, Rurouni Kenshin franchise director Keishi Ohtomo’s newest period epic, The Legend & Butterfly is coming to Japan theaters on January 27. Headliners Takuya Kimura and Haruka Ayase star from a script by Ryota Kawase (The Confidence Man: JP trilogy, Parasyte Part 1 & 2). The 16th century period epic tells of nefarious warlord Nobunaga Oda, his dissenting relationship with wife Nohime following their arranged marriage, and the synergy that ensued between them as war strategists in the face of a pending attack by Nobunaga’s rival during the Warring States Period. Rounding out the cast are Hideaki Ito, Miki Nakatani, Hio Miyazawa, Kinya Kitaoji, Somegoro Ichikawa, Takuma Otoo and Takumi Saito. The first official trailer arrived about a month ago so I’m way late on this, but better late than never if only to spy an admiring eye […]

If there’s one thing that serves as inviting to watch a recent series, its getting to screen that show’s feature film continuation, which is nifty little way to truly end a series drama on a high note. To that end, it definitely depends on how those behind the scenes attempt to weave together the connecting stories. Arguably, it might even lead to the notion that said film can even stand on its own – a notion that Toya Sato’s Caution: Hazardous Wife: The Movie certainly puts to the test in segueing from the cliffhanger end of the titular NTV drama starring Haruka Ayase (Honnouji Hotel, Ichi) and Hidetoshi Nishijima (Silent Night, Mozu franchise) in reprisals of their respective roles. There’s a gradual tone shift as the film commences with an opening action sequence before laying into the moment Nami (Ayase) awakens from a surrealistic dream. When the film starts, we […]
Fresh from the annals of NTV broadcast history, fans will soon get to relive character favorite Nami Isayama in the big screen sequel, Caution, Hazardous Wife: The Movie. Kaiji trilogy and Gatchaman helmer Toya Sato directs returning screen couple, actress Haruka Ayase and actor Hidetoshi Nishijima with a story following the events of the 2017 ten-episode television series. That show follows special agent Nami (Ayase) avert toward simple married life with IT office worker Yuki (Nishijima) following a blind date. She tries to keep her past a secret from Yuki while events unfold surrounding the rescue of a woman from a domestic abuse situation. As the show itself tells it however, it appears Nami isn’t the only one in her marriage with a double life. That’s all we know of this property as it precedes Sato’s movie which opens in Japan on June 5, apart from what the film’s first […]
