The Comeback is currently streaming on Hi-YAH!, and is available on Digital from Well Go USA. Mainland action titles tend to fall by the wayside for me. This is mainly because I don’t have an iQIYI account like some of my mutuals do, and so I rely on the good will and economic viability of a streamer like Hi-YAH! to obtain these kinds of titles for their output to the niche Asian film crowd which I’m a part of. Alas, we get The Comeback, which marks the most recent reteaming of director Chris Huo and his Blind War star Andy On, who takes a seat here as antagonist to lead thespian Simon Yam. The streamer’s logline would have you thinking differently as it cites Yam’s role as Mr. Hua, a revered antique dealer in a small village who helps fight back against a violent gang trying to seize the properties. The arrival of Baby Assassins 2 to the Hi-YAH! streamer couldn’t have come at a better time. With a spin-off series drama in the works and a third film already making the festival rounds, the Yugo Sakamoto-directed franchise remains one of the most popular of its kind with its energizing lead cast, quirky and off-beat humor, and stellar action that crackles with each gun battle and hand-to-hand fight scene. Well Go USA is the North American home to the franchise thusfar having already released the first two films on home media, as well as its adjacent streamer. The second film returns Akari Takaishi and Saori Izawa in the respective roles of Chisato and Mahiro, two coming-of-age guilded members of an assassin organization still struggling to live life responsibly while intercepting two rival assassins from another company, played by Tatsuomi Hamada and Joey Iwanaga. Remember The Assassin? Welp, that one’s coming to the U.S. too. Well Go USA did the lord’s work this year and acquired director Kwak Jeong-deok’s sword-wielding freshman thriller, and they’ve put out the first trailer with the requisite retitling, Night Of The Assassin. After a deadly, long-dormant health condition surfaces during a mission, Joseon’s most lethal assassin goes into hiding to seek a cure without revealing his identity. But upon witnessing a ruthless campaign of terror against local villagers, the region’s deadliest killer comes out of retirement in order to exact his own brutal brand of vigilante justice. The Joseon-era action thriller stars Shin Hyun-joon, Lee Moon-sik, Kim Min-kyun, Hong Eunki, and Kim Byung-choon. Well Go USA’s premiere Asian film streamer, Hi-YAH!, will launch the pic on July 21, with an August 8 release on Digital, Blu-ray and DVD.
Disclaimer: This review discusses gun violence on school grounds. Before he took the global festival scene by storm with Baby Assassins, Hugo Sakamoto was already the talk of genre forums and film industrialists for his winning work in both action and horror productions. Last year’s release of action crime drama, A Janitor stands the test of time, to that affect, with Well Go USA’s Hi-YAH! squarely catching on and adding it to their service, effectively certifying Sakamoto as one of the most promising directors making headway in the past year. Sakamoto directs from a script by Shozen Matsudaira, which sets things in motion with the violent flashback of a father shot dead – childhood tragedy suffered by a young Akira Fukami, who is then taken in by his father’s sworn blood brother, Yoshiki Majima (Kazuhiro Yamaji), who happens to be the criminal underworld’s most powerful tycoon. Years later, Fukami is […]
It was in the months leading up to a Five-A-Day piece I did back in December 2017 when I shared a bit of what found online regarding a film I didn’t think would ever see the light of day. This pertains to Crazy Fist, a film I did manage to catch floating around in market news with All Rights Entertainment repping the project, all whilst having heard nothing about its movement or any acquisition whatsoever. The casting of Steve Yoo, who’s been a rising star of sorts featuring opposite Xing Yu in 2013’s The Wrath Of Vajra, Jackie Chan’s CZ12 and Little Big Soldier, and cameoing in Keanu Reeves’s Man Of Tai Chi, I felt would’ve been a motivator for this film to catch some momentum. Alas, seeing that Well Go USA Entertainment has snagged the rights to this heavy-hitting action thriller probably doesn’t surprise anybody considering their expertise in […]
Out of all of last year’s choice festival selections, Areel Abu Bakar’s Geran has to be one of the proudest for those able to screen films. Highly celebrated by NYAFF, the award-winning action thriller now gets a fair shake with an official trailer for its stateside release as Silat Warriors: Deed Of Death. release this Friday on Hi-YAH!, before hitting Digital, Blu-ray and DVD from July 6 through Well Go USA. When a reckless young gambler’s wild lifestyle of illegal betting, drag racing, and brutal street fights pits him against a ruthless criminal enterprise, his luck finally runs out. The gang shows up at his father’s home to collect on the debt, forcing his family to fight in order to save their land—and his life. In addition to actors Namron (One Two Jaga, Dukun, Redha) and Fad Anuar (Dollah Superstar, TV’s “KL Gangster: Underworld”), first-time film director Areel Abu Bakar […]
