Hwang Jung-min’s return to the role that made director Ryoo Seung-wan’s 2015 crime flick, Veteran, a hit has proven ever to be a treat for fans of Korean action. The Cannes-selected thriller, I, The Executioner, is now poised for a run via Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) for its North American Premiere, while Capelight Pictures has since stepped up with an official trailer and a September 27 theatrical release to break to fans! The veteran detective Seo Do-cheol (HWANG Jung-min) and his team at Major Crimes, relentless in their pursuit of criminals, join forces with rookie cop Park Sun-woo (JUNG Hae-in) to track down a serial killer who has plunged the nation into turmoil. Typically a lot of these releases go to disc or straight to streaming, so if you’re trying to get in on the fun at a theater, your local listings for this one might be your best […]
Director Lee Myung-hoon’s new action comedy thriller, Mission: Cross, was something that I had my eye on earlier this year and wondered about. Of course Netflix would be the ones to quietly snap it up and now we have an August 9 worldwide launch date set for the streamer. In the ultimate test of marriage, an agent-turned-househusband gets tangled in a perilous mission with his detective wife, who’s clueless about his past. Yum Jung-ah and Hwang Jung-min star along with Jeon Hye-jin, Jung Man-shik, and Kim Chan-hyung. Check out the trailer!
Unbelievably, Ryoo Seung-wan’s Smugglers is yet to make it stateside. Perhaps that will change given the traction the oft-touted action filmmaker is now getting with his next affair, I, The Executioner, which screens out of competion at Cannes this month. Detective Seo Do-cheol (HWANG Jung-min) and his Major Crime Investigation Division tirelessly track down criminals day and night, often at the expense of their personal lives. When the murder of a professor reveals links to past cases, suspicions of a serial killer arise, plunging the country into turmoil. As Major Crimes delves into the investigation, the killer taunts them by publicly releasing a teaser online, indicating the next victim, and intensifying the chaos. To tackle the escalating threat, the team brings in idealistic rookie officer Park Sun-woo (JUNG Hae-in), leading to unexpected twists in the case’s trajectory. CJ ENM is proudly signaling fans with a stimulating teaser to hold folks over until […]
Choi Dong-hoon’s follow-up to hit sci-fi spectacle Alienoid and Ryoo Seung-wan’s post-Smugglers career with a sequel to 2015’s Veteran aren’t the only titles worth eyeing in the new year. For this, we have a brief glimpse at Mission Cross, featuring the respective actors of both aforementioned flicks, actors Yum Jung-ah and Hwang Jung-min. A man leaving his past behind and living as a househusband ischased by his wife for his secret life! A hard-working househusband and a former special forces officer Gang-mu (HWANG Jung-min) is hiding his past from his wife Mi-sun (YUM Jung-ah) who is a violent crime detective. One day, a mysterious woman, Hee-ju (JEON Hye-jin) appears to Gang-mu and Mi-sun assumes that his husband is having an affair. Mi-sun is after Gang-mu and Gang-mu is after something else. It eventually leads both of them to unexpected situations! Gang-mu can no longer be a peaceful househusband after all…! […]
My early Asian cinema fandom wasn’t without my enjoyment of director Kim Sung-su’s work, so it’s great to see him still at the helm. His latest is titled 12.12: The Day (f.k.a. Spring of Seoul) and rejoins him with his Asura: The City Of Madness leading men Hwang Jung-min and his Beat star Jung Woo-sung, along with Cheer Up, Mr. Lee and Emergency Declaration actor Park Hae-joon. On December 1979, Seoul had been enduring a harsh winterbefore the upcoming spring. After the assassination of President Park, martial law has been declared. A coup d’état bursts out by Defense Security Commander CHUN Doo-gwang (HWANG Jung-min) and a private band of officers following him. Capital Defense Commander LEE Tae-shin (JUNG Woo-sung), an obstinate soldier who believes the military should not take political actions, fights against CHUN Doo-gwang to stop him. The conflict between the two grows while military leaders are holding their […]

The official trailer is up and running along with a new character promo featuring actor Hyun Bin who stars in the film along with Hwang Jung-min. The year is 2007 and in Afghanistan, 23 South Korean missionaries get captured and held hostage by the Taliban. South Korean government dispatches Dae-sik(Hyun Bin), a National Intelligence Service agent, and the diplomat Jae-ho(Hwang Jung-min) to the warzone to negotiate for the group’s lives. It’s a dangerous mission, and soon not only are the hostages at risk, but also their two would-be rescuers. There might be another character promo which I’ll add at some point if it comes to it, but check out the footage below!

Guns, drugs, zealotry, and violence are abound in the upcoming series, Narco-Saints, from showrunner Yoon Jong-bin. Debuting all six episodes on Netflix from September 9, the new crime drama series marks a reunion for Yoon with actor Ha Jung-woo who has starred in nearly all of Yoon’s films since 2005’s The Unforgiven. Narco-Saints follows an ordinary entrepreneur enlisted by the National Intelligence Service for a secret government mission to capture a Korean drug lord operating in South America. Yoon is joined by his The Spy Gone North co-writer Kwon Sung-hui in creating the series which is reportedly based on true events. The show also comes stacked with a bevy of A-list screentalent, including multi-nominated Squid Game actor Park Hae-soo, Yoon’s The Spy Gone North star Hwang Jung-min, and Taiwanese film star Chang Chen of Dune fame. Also starring are Jo Woo-jin (Alienoid) and Yoo Yeon-Seok (New Year Blues), and the […]
Well Go USA is proudly releasing Ryoo Seung-wan’s latest period espionage thriller, Escape From Mogadishu this week wherever movies are sold. The film, which based on real life events surrounding the Somali Civil War in 1991, marks yet another level in artistic and creative growth for Ryoo who made his feature debut more than twenty years ago starring alongside his brother in gritty crime noir, Die Bad, and diving further into a variety slate of action titles like 2002’s No Blood No Tears, martial arts comedy Arahan, 2008 spy romp Dachimawa Lee and revenge thriller The City Of Violence to name a few. Depending on where you look, you might get lucky to find all, or at least some of these films on disc in some form or fashion, as necessary as it is. Alas, with streaming staking its claim over much of the commercial film market these days, and […]

The past summer has been remarkable to say the least, with theatrical releases in Korea having turned around amid the current pandemic. It’s certainly benefitted director Hong Won-chan whose newest action crime thriller, Deliver Us From Evil, drew the #1 spot topping 1.3 million in admissions for its first four days in August. You might have also noticed a new trailer which you can check out below the page, teasing an extended edition featuring six minutes of footage following its initial release from CJ Entertainment. That version is expected to arrive in Korea next week, while the word now is that Well Go USA Entertainment has acquired North American rights to the hit film for a March 2021 release date to be announced. Hwang Jung-Min (The Wailing), Lee Jung-Jae (Svaha: The Sixth Finger) and Park Jeong-Min (Tazza: One-Eyed Jack) star in the film from Hong, who previously earned a Best […]
Director Hong Won-chan (The Yellow Sea, The Chaser) is back, and at best I would love nothing more than for my own instincts to suggest that his latest, Deliver Us From Evil, will hit the festival ground running soon. Actor Hwang Jung-min (Veteran, The Battleship Island) is back as well, and here, he plays a contract killer who, following his final assignment, arrives in Thailand to investigate a kidnapping. A deadly game of cat and mouse ensues when he’s targeted by the sibling of his last assignment, played by the fantastic Lee Jung-jae (Along With The Gods franchise, Assassination). The official trailer is now online ahead of an August 5 theatrical Korean release from CJ Entertainment, and with footage that wholly promises some classic, Korean mano-a-mano action and drama to entice its target audience. Deliver Us From Evil also stars Park Jung-min (Time To Hunt), Choi Hee-seo (Our Body), Park […]
The Yellow Sea? The Chaser? Office? Hopefully one of these among writer and director Hong Won-chan’s filmography has gotten your attention in the past decade or so, and if you know your trivia, you know Indonesian action star Iko Uwais is a fan of the man’s work. This, of course, brings us to CJ Entertainment’s newest prospective thriller, Deliver Us From Evil, which has Hwang Jung-min (Veteran, A Violent Prosecutor) and Lee Jung-jae (Svaha: The Sixth Finger, Along With The Gods franchise), leading the tale of a man about to sacrifice everything to survive a contract killing. The film also stars Time To Hunt and Tazza: One Eyed Jack actor Park Jung-min, and Anarchist From Colony actress Choi Hee-seo. There’s no exact date, but the trailer sells, and I’m excited to catch this one in full after its July release.
Director Hong Won-chan is currently in production with tentative title, Deliver Us From Evil. I love this title already, and it stars Hwang Jung-min (Veteran, The Battleship Island) and Lee Jung-jae (The Thieves, Assassination) who have been filming the new action drama since last month. The film marks a reunion for Hwang and Lee who last starred in gangster thriller, New World and occult suspense thriller, Svaha: The Sixth Finger. Deliver Us From Evil now reunites the two going forward, telling the tale of a man whose life turns upside down after being assigned to a contract killing. Best New Prize-winning actress Choi Hee-seo (Anarchist From The Colony) also stars along with actor Park Jung-min whose recent South Korean threquel starrer, Tazza: One Eyed Jack, just saw its North American rollout from Well Go USA. Next to his freshman directing debut with 2015 thriller, Office, Hong bares a small list […]
I guess you could call it a pretty auspicious time that a film like Kundo and Nameless Gangster helmer Yoon Jong-Bin’s The Spy Gone North would exist, given recent news of a truce after years of war between the North and South. Yoon’s film isn’t alone in this perspective either, which is good, all things considered, essentially joining in the creative frontlines for a story that invites moviegoers for an historic tale based on a true story reflective of more tumultous times. In 1993, former military officer PARK Suk-young is recruited as a spy by South Korea’s National Intelligence Service, and given the codename “Black Venus”. He is then sent to infiltrate a group of high-ranking North Korean officials based in Beijing, with the ultimate goal of acquiring information on the North’s nuclear program. After becoming close to RiMyong-un, a key power broker, Black Venus succeeds beyond his wildest dreams […]
Lest you think you’re running out of reasons to enjoy your summer at the movies, Ryoo Seung Wan’s new period epic, The Battleship Island is finally rolling out with an official U.S. trailer this week. The film is kicking off with a Buena Park premiere at CGV Cinemas in California ahead of a rollout that will slowly expand throughout the state as well as in Seattle, Washington by August 4. During the Japanese colonial era, roughly 400 Korean people, who were forced onto Battleship Island (‘Hashima Island’) to mine for coal, attempt to escape. The film Hwang Jung-min, So Ji-sub, Song Joong-ki, Lee Jung-hyun and Kim Su-an. Spot the trailer and official U.S. poster below, and visit the official CJ Entertainment USA website for exact exhibitor locations and dates.
Director Ryoo Seung-Wan’s Battleship Island is coming this summer following the success of his 2015 action comedy, Veteran. That one is already poised for a sequel while here, we are swept into a much darker period in history as the film delves into the lives of three men and their stories among the hundreds of others forcefully taken on Hashima Island during Japanese occupation at the top of the 1900s. Hwang Jung-Min plays a bandmaster desperate to protect his family while So Ji-Sub plays a tough fighter with a warm heart, and Song Joong-Ki stars as an insurgent leading a rescue mission for one of his independence fighters. The film is opening this summer and, as per its brand, may hopefully acquire a release via CJ’s USA shingle, so it’s a waiting game, no less. In the meantime, the latest teaser has already gone viral so take a look below!
