Harbin is currently playing in select U.S. theaters from Well Go USA. Woo Min-ho is someone I’ve been slow to keep up with since I first caught wind of his 2015 political thriller, Inside Man. The good news is that some of his films aren’t intangible, so I can definitely catch them when I get time. As of late, that includes Harbin, Woo’s newest period assassin drama which chronicles the efforts of Korea’s rebellion against Japanese colonialism, led in part by Ahn Jung-geun, a lieutenant beleagured by a crisis of conscience following a fatal blunder at the cost of fighters, putting him under heavy scrutiny among ranks in the resistance. Intent on ameliorating his actions, it is then that Ahn makes the stern commitment to eliminate Japan’s first prime minister, Hirobumi Ito, as the empire looks to annex Korea. The effort entails evading Japanese soldiers while trekking between snowy rural […]
Woo Min-ho’s new period spy drama, Harbin, is set to make landfall in theaters on January 3 from Well Go USA. Harbin marks the return of lead actor Hyun Bin who also leads the cast in Kim Sung-hoon’s Joseon action horror, Rampant, which the label also released in 2018. In 1909, several years after Korea is forced into becoming a Japanese colony, freedom fighters plot the daring assassination of Japan’s prime minister during their quest for independence. Also starring are Park Jeong-min, Jeon Yeo-been, Jo Woo-jin, and Lee Dong-wook. Catch the trailer below!
The Man Standing Next and The Drug King helmer Woo Min-ho is back with another offering this time in Harbin, which now gets an official trailer ahead of its Korean release from CJ ENM. Harbin is set in the early 1900s and chronicles the complexities of leadership faced by beleagured Korean independence activist Ahn Jung-geun, who sets out to assassinate Japan’s prime minister in an effort to redeem himself. The new period spy thriller held its World Premiere for Toronto festivalgoers in September and is now poised for a December 25 release, featuring a cast led by Hyun-Bin, Park Jeong-min, Jo Woo-jin, and more. Well Go USA Entertainment picked up the film for North American release shortly after its Toronto run. Catch the official trailer and posters below!
Currently revving up for a Gala Presentation for the 49th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival is Harbin, a new spy thriller from director Woo Min-ho (The Man Standing Next, The Drug King). CJ Entertainment is plotting a release later this year for the pic which is set in 1909, and chronicles the exploits of Korean independence activist Ahn Jung-gum and his mission to infiltrate Harbin, China and assassinate Japan’s first Prime Minister. Actor Hyun-Bin (The Point Men, Rampant) stars along with Park Jeong-min (Dr. Cheon and The Lost Talisman), Jo Woo-jin (Alienoid), and Jeon Yeo-bin (Cobweb). Watch the intense first teaser below!
815 Pictures is proudly releasing The Whistleblower and Little Forest helmer Yim Soon-rye’s new espionage thriller, The Point Men, in select theaters in the U.S. and Canada on January 27. The official trailer is up and running along with a new character promo featuring actor Hyun Bin who stars in the film along with Hwang Jung-min. The year is 2007 and in Afghanistan, 23 South Korean missionaries get captured and held hostage by the Taliban. South Korean government dispatches Dae-sik(Hyun Bin), a National Intelligence Service agent, and the diplomat Jae-ho(Hwang Jung-min) to the warzone to negotiate for the group’s lives. It’s a dangerous mission, and soon not only are the hostages at risk, but also their two would-be rescuers. There might be another character promo which I’ll add at some point if it comes to it, but check out the footage below!

Based on the true events of the Korean hostage crisis in Afghanistan. A group of Korean tourists is taken hostage by an extremist Taliban group in Afghanistan. A year after working together on Confidential Assignment, actor Hyun-Bin’s latest return to the screen proves continually fruitful once more with Kim Seung-Hoon on period action adventure horror, Rampant. Why the film underwent three title changes is beyond my own understanding, though Rampant definitely sticks both creatively as well as applicably with respect to the narrative preset in Hwang Jo-Yoon’s screenplay. Ramapant immediately immerses you into its murky Joseon-era milleu with the fiery high-seas raid of a merchant ship and a violent attack on one of the raiders. That exposition sets up the rest of the film in which we meet King Lee Jo (Kim Eui-Sung) as he’s embroiled in the urgency brought about by potential traitors in their midst, including the crown prince himself. We later catch up with the other prince, Lee Chung (Hyun-Bin) finally released from Qing captivity after ten years as he and his servant, Hak-Soo […]
Lee Jong-Suk’s explosive thriller debut, THE NEGOTIATION, stars Hyun Bin and Son Ye-Jin and opens this Fall from CJ ENTERTAINMENT
Kim Sung-Hoon is back in style this November with the new martial arts action horror thriller, RAMPANT!
Hyun Bin and Jang Dong-Gun star in RAMPANT, the new action horror epic from director Kim Sung-Hoon which opens this October!
Actor Hyun Bin has a few titles releasing before the end of 2018 and the latest, The Negotiation, is now up for grabs with a first teaser. The star of The Swindlers last year’s The Swindlers stars in his debut role for freshman director Lee Jong-Suk, centered on the kidnapping of a Seoul Metro Police superior. The Pirates actress Son Ye-Jin headlines as the protagonist as teased in the latest nail-biting teaser ahead of the film’s September 19 release.
It’s often interesting in wondering how a director can conjure a mystery tale that keeps audiences guessing. Jang Chang-Won’s new film, The Swindlers, certainly lives up to the task with as much intricacy and detail as possible in its two hour duration. Written by Jang for his own debut, the film sets its course with tragedy in its wake when a church learns it was swindled out of billions by Doo-Chil (Heo Sung-Tae), a schemer who fakes his own death while escaping from Korea. Eight years later, we meet Ji-Sung (Hyun Bin), a vengeful con-artist hunting Doo-Chil and eager to hatch a plan of his own until he’s forced to pair up with Hee-Soo (Yoo Ji-Tae), an ambitious prosecutor to help culminate more than enough evidence to catch the big fish. The devil, of course, is in the details with a story that offers numerous moving pieces in its narrative. […]
Jang Chang-won’s directorial debut is edging closer to its November 22 start in theaters for heist comedy, The Swindlers. That will be just over a week off from its expected rollout in North America starting December 1 while Well Go USA is making things official with its own push. Trailer included. High stakes and fast talk are the game in this crime caper that brings together an all-star cast (Yoo Ji-tae, Hyun Bin, Bae Seong-woo, Park Sung-woong, Nana) as unlikely allies from different sides of the law. Each member of the team has their own motives, but they’ll have to work together to achieve their common goal – trapping the world’s most legendary con man. Check out the trailer below!
One doesn’t usually think “zombies” when mentioning a Joseon period film. That genre is usually keen on feats of swordplay, war, drama and romance among others, so while as interesting as zombie movies can be in any time period, surely enough Confidential Assignment helmer Kim Sung-Hoon will have something for cinephiles and genre film fans to gravitate to by next year with his latest Joseon era thriller, Outbreak. The film mark’s Kim’s third stint at the helm whilst reuniting with actor Hyun Bin for the production of the new period zombie thriller ahead of its 2018 release. Joining the two is actor Jang Dong Gun (No Tears for the Dead) starring as Kim Ja Joon, Minister of War and rival to Bin’s role of Lee Chong, a Joseon prince who is initially held hostage and returns to Joseon to fight alongside his elder brother, Crown Prince Lee Young in the […]
2017 is here and first on CJ Entertainment’s agenda is a new title that looks to continue the appeal of moviegoers with some more spectacular action and comedy of the South Korean variety. For this, we have Cooperation, here to help bring things into focus some ahead of its January 18 release from director Kim Sung-Hoon. SYNOPSIS: North Korean detective Im Chul Ryung is sent to South Korea to catch Cha Ki Sung, the boss of a North Korean refugee crime organization. There, Chul Ryung cooperates with South Korean detective Kang Jin Tae. For the first time, the two countries cooperate to take down a criminal. Actor Hyun Bin of Spin Kick and The Fatal Encounter fame pairs alongside Public Enemy franchise and Veteran co-star Yu Hae-Jin for this latest affair which adds a dose or two of slapstick to accomodate the bullets, fisticuffs and high-speed pursuits that ensue. Watch […]
My own off-time has allowed me to catch up on a bunch of South Korean film gems this year and so I plan on taking in some more going into 2017. Cooperation, CJ Entertainment’s latest feat from sophomore director Kim Sung-Hoon certainly looks like a worthwhile treat with an odd couple twist about two cops from both sides of the DMZ working to bring down the boss of a North Korean refugee crime organization. The Fatal Encounter star Hyun-Bin and Veteran co-star Yu Hae-Jin lead the film opposite Intimate Enemies co-star Kim Ju-Hyeok among its cast for its January release. Thus, we have a first teaser to help kick things off until the usual trailer and poster goods arrive and for all intents and purposes, this looks pretty lively and fun to look forward to. Enjoy the teaser trailer.
Following a teaser released back in January, we now have a new trailer for director Lee Jae Kyu‘s new saeguk drama, The King’s Wrath, featuring actor Hyun Bin in his first film role after finishing his mandated tour in the military in late 2012. Bin stars as an eighteenth century ruler caught at the center of an internal conspiracy to kill him following the death of his father, and the further political upheaval and turmoil that ensues. Several posters and pictures are floating around the internet as we speak, but we also have a few new posters to check out in addition to the official trailer which you can catch a glimpse of below, courtesy of HanCinema. The King’s Wrath bows domestically on April 30, 2014. SYNOPSIS: King Jeongjo (1752-1800) was the 22nd ruler of the Joseon Dynasty. Nicknamed the “King of Misfortune,” he witnessed the death of his father […]
