The new samurai western revenge thriller opens in theaters on May 30 from IFC Films!
Typically horror isn’t in my wheelhouse, but I do like to switch it up on occasion. That especially goes for films that pull off story concepts that bode as traditional until its makers take its viewers aback with mind-bending twists that reveal the director’s work as something entirely different that what it sets out to be in the mind’s eye. Get Away is exactly that kind of film, and from none other than director Steffen Haars and actor/screenwriter Nick Frost. Murky foreshadowing is the visual and atmospheric start to the more jubilant intro of the Smith family (played by Frost and actors Nick Frost, Aisling Bea, Sebastian Croft, and Maisie Ayres), whose trip to the remote Swedish island of Svalta is rife with annoying trivia and grim warnings from the locals before getting on the ferry. Once there, they come in contact with the unfriendly island villagers before connecting with […]
It was last summer when “Gangs Of London” cohort Xavier Gens’ newest action adventure thriller, Farang, enjoyed its Fantasia Festival world premiere as Mayhem!. Having since been acquired by IFC Films and garnering a slew of enough buzz quotes to rival the levels of violence and spectacle being touted since its French rollout over the summer, we now have an official trailer which you can view below ahead of its theatrical and On-Demand U.S. release on January 5. A martial artist and ex-con Sam (Nassim Lyes) starts a new life in Thailand to escape a local gang lord, but a kidnapped family member sucks him back into the underworld he’d left behind in this propulsive action spectacle. I’m jelly of anyone who’s seen this film already. At any rate, that release date is just after my birthday so maybe I’ll finally get to treat myself to a nice night out […]
Just ahead of its upcoming premiere at Fantasia in Montreal, Xavier Gens’ Mayhem! is on deck to release in 2024 from IFC Films. The film stars Nassim Lyes along with Olivier Gourmet, Loryn Nounay, Vithaya Pansringarm and Sahajak Boonthanakit, from a script by Magali Rossitto, Guillaume Lemans and Gens. Here are the programming notes via the fest’s Matthew Kiernan: Sam (Nassim Lyes) is a man without freedom. With a few months left on his prison sentence, the amateur boxer enters a work furlough program that allows him to taste the freedom to come. But that freedom proves elusive and a tragic event forces Sam to flee to Thailand, where years later he believes he’s found it with a loving wife (Loryn Nounay) and daughter. They hope to build a new life on a beachfront property, but ruthless local gangster Narong (Olivier Gourmet) stands in their way. In order to obtain […]
While I do not like real-life disasters (I have had enough of those), I do love a good science fiction disaster film. IFC Midnight has recently announced that they have acquired the North American rights to Rubikon. The film is directed by Magdalena Lauritsch and has been shown in other countries, but now it can be distributed in North America. So what’s the film about? Disaster strikes on earth. In RUBIKON, the crew of a space station, Hannah (Julia Franz Richter), Gavin (George Blagden) and Dimitri (Mark Ivanir) must decide whether they risk their lives to get back home during a global catastrophe and search for survivors or stay safe in the sophisticated station’s algae symbiosis system, which makes them fully self-reliant. RUBIKON questions whether we have the right to seal ourselves off in safety and ignorance from the ongoing problems of the world, as three people with three very […]
Paul Solet is a filmmaker who has been making strides in the movie industry for over a decade. Coming onto the scene with the brutal and unique zombie film GRACE. He went on to solidify his name as a creator to keep eye on with work as one of the main writers on the space exploration series MARS for National Geographic as well as continuing to spearhead his own film projects like the true-crime documentary TREAD, about a fortified bulldozer that wreaks havoc on a small town, and the thriller BULLET HEAD, featuring Antonio Banderas, John Malkovich, and Adrien Brody as three criminals trapped in a warehouse with a seemingly unstoppable guard dog. Solet recently reunited with his BULLET HEAD lead, and Academy Award-winning actor, Adrien Brody for a project that is very personal to the pair- a gritty action yarn titled CLEAN. Here is the film’s official synopsis: […]
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. A quiet loner with a dark and violent history finds redemption by protecting an innocent child unfairly targeted by criminals. Oh, you have? What if I told you this anti-hero leads a quiet life that they narrate while driving around at night working a blue-collar job? You get it! Yeah, wait, I see your point- it is pretty similar to other stuff. In this one though, the main character has an ominous nickname from their mysterious past and at one point they reveal a massive back tattoo that really illustrates (get it?) how tough they are right before they start taking out the bad guys in cold-blooded fashion? Oh right! I forgot about those movies where they already did that. You see this concept’s different though because it’s going to feature an actor not normally known for action. It’ll really be a […]
Indigenous athlete and breakout International Boxing Association middleweight crown winner and WBA Super lightweight champion boxer, Kali “K.O.” Reis, is moving up this year after taking the mantle in 2021 with an impressive display in front of festival audiences with new dramatic crime thriller, Catch The Fair One. A propulsive, edge-of-your-seat thriller, CATCH THE FAIR ONE follows Kaylee “K.O.” Uppashaw (Kali Reis), an Indigenous former boxer, when she discovers that her missing sister is possibly alive and circulating in a trafficking network. She plugs herself into this dark and dangerous world to find her. Kaylee’s strength and determination are tested as she fights the real fight of her life—to find her sister and make her family whole again. I missed my chance to catch this during Fantasia last year, sadly, but was thrilled to find out IFC Films scored a release for this year and as of Monday’s trailer release, […]
Actor Adrien Brody is diving right into the nitty gritty with a searing look into vengeance and redemption with new crime thriller, Clean. The official poster is now up for viewing below following last month’s trailer debut, with a theatrical release date set for January 28 from IFC Films. Tormented by a past life, garbage man Clean (Adrien Brody) attempts a life of quiet redemption. But when his good intentions mark him a target of local crime boss (Glenn Fleshler), Clean is forced to reconcile with the violence of his past. Clean rejoins Brody with Bullet Head director Paul Solet, who penned the script with Brody. The film also stars Glenn Fleshler, Richie Merritt, Chandler Ari DuPont, Mykelti Williamson, RZA, Michelle Wilson and John Bianco.
Adrien Brody is proudly checking all the boxes for his latest collaborative effort, Clean. IFC Films is opening the new dramatic crime thriller in theaters on January 28. Clean, a man with a violent and criminal past, seeks redemption after being awakened by personal tragedy. He dedicates his life to his broken community, and the safety of young girl who reminds him of his daughter. When her life is put in danger, it ignites a return to the darkness and violence he’s worked so hard to leave behind. In his attempts to save her, he might very well save himself. Brody’s statement – released along with the assets – alludes to his upbringing in New York City, acknowledging ongoing hardships that continue to plague rural and suburban neighborhoods to this day. He describes the film as “a tribute to the fearlessness of those, who, in spite of pain, loss and […]
Currently a part of this year’s 25th Fantasia International Film Festival line-up, director Josef Kubota Wladyka (“Narcos”, Dirty Hands) is proudly taking the mantle with his sophomore feature, Catch The Fair One, landing at IFC Films for a U.S. release in 2022. Trades broke the news on Wednesday for the upcoming revenge thriller which since broke ground at this year’s Tribeca festivities, winniny the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature, and signaling what’s being described as a “raw breakout performance” from real-life professional boxer, Kali “K.O.” Reis in her screen debut; The first Indigenous fighter to win the International Boxing Association middleweight crown, Reis is also currently the WBA Super lightweight champion. Written by Wladyka from a story developed with Reis, Catch The Fair One is billed as a “propulsive, edge-of-your-seat thriller”. Reis stars as Kaylee “K.O.” Uppashaw, an Indigenous former boxer who plugs herself into the dark and dangerous […]
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind is a far different film than Chad Hartigan’s new sci-fi drama, Little Fish, though it’s what echoed to me in terms of story elements and vision, sans the more woeful, interpersonal melodrama of Michael Gondry’s 2004 multi-award winner. This one definitely puts its own spin on romantic narratives through a slightly more escapist dystopian lens and has Olivia Cooke and Jack O’Connell headlining from a script by Mattson Tomlin. The film is now available in select theaters, digital and cable VOD from IFC films. Little Fish, a romance set in a near-future Seattle teetering on the brink of calamity, is the fourth feature film from director Chad Hartigan. Little Fish stars Olivia Cooke (Ready Player One, Bates Motel), Jack O’Connell (Unbroken, Skins), Soko (Her, The Dancer), and Raúl Castillo (Looking, We The Animals). Little Fish opens in the midst of a global epidemic: Neuroinflammatory […]
