5.5 min. read I’m not as knowledgable on kaiju cinema as, say, our own Edward Orndorff is. It’s a space of cinema with a vast history of its own and it’s one that Keizo Murase has resided in for much of his life and career, and for this, I know about as much as I can through brief reasearch and some screening I can find available to me in the course of my week. Thankfully, my latest opportune moment comes by way of Brush Of The God, another film that in a few ways brings me full circle after nearly twenty years of being a DVD collector. I watched the opening credits and saw that Yumiko Shaku and Shiro Sano were cast and the first time these actors hit my radar WAS in fact two decades ago when one of my earliest purchases from the now-defunct HKFlix online store was […]
An idea more than forty years in the making and two years since heading up crowdfunding efforts at Kickstarter and Motion Gallery, celebrated kaiju costume designer Keizo Murase will finally get his day with upcoming kaiju feature, Brush Of The God. Plans are in motion to premiere the film at the 19th edition of the Osaka Asian Film Festival in March, before scoring releases throughout Japan and abroad. Brush Of The God stars Rio Suzuki and Takeru Narahara, with a script by Takeshi Nakazawa, and with cinematography and SFX artistry by Daisuke Sato who also produced the film. Below is more info on the film in the OAFF programming notes by […]
Legendary Kaiju cinema stalwart Keizo Murase, 88, is taking matters into his own hands with feature directing debut, Brush Of The God. Murase, who began his career in the 1950s working as a monster suit designer for Toho, has since taken to Kickstarter to help raise funds for the project, for which he will, for the most part, employ the kind of practical Japanese special effects wizardry that is signature of yesteryear Kaiju films. Murase will direct from a script by Takeshi Nakazawa (Hatsukoi-Geinin), which pits the film’s very title as crucial to the plot. The story centers on Akari, the granddaughter of a recently-deceased SFX model maker who was on track to make Brush Of The God his first feature film. Aided by her classmate at her grandfather’s farewell party, hardcore Tokusatsu fan Takuya, the two suddenly find themselves sucked into a wormhole that pulls them into the world […]
