A new Variety exclusive is out as of Friday along with a pair of official stills to help announce the completion of upcoming martial arts thriller, The Furious. The Bangkok, Thailand-set production is directed by action specialist Kenji Tanigaki (Enter The Fat Dragon, Sakra) and features a pan-Asian cast including mainland Chinese star Xie Miao, Indonesian star Joe Taslim, and Thai star Jeeja Yanin, along with Yang Enyu, Brian Le, Joey Iwanaga, and Yayan Ruhian. Tanigaki directs from a script by Mak Tin Shu, and follows a simple tradesman (Xie Miao) who fights his way through a complex web of criminals and evil agents in a frantic attempt to win back his kidnapped daughter by any means necessary. Production hails from Edko Films Ltd. whose Bill Kong is joined by producers Frank Hui and Shan Tam, along with XYZ Films whose Todd Brown and Aram Tertzakian are exec producing next […]
Sometimes dreams really do come true. A month or so ago, I was approached by Lee – head honcho here at Film Combat Syndicate – with an offer to write for the site. Well, if you know me, I love to spew my thoughts down on the page but I rarely find time. For Lee, I would do my best to make the time. Fast forward and I’m offered the chance to not only watch Soi Cheang’s latest foray into action cinema, TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN, but to record the first ever video review for my YouTube channel, Fu for Thought. As you might imagine, I once again jumped at the chance. And here we are. I’ll admit, cramming my messy thoughts into a less-than-thirty-minute video was bloody hard. But I managed. Did I miss pertinent plot points? Yep. Did I cover every fight scene? Absolutely not. But […]
The Cannes Film Festival officially kicks off today and it’s already delivered it’s first gem in the form of the first official poster and plot synopsis for the upcoming Donnie Yen vehicle, THE PROSECUTOR. Not only is Donnie the lead in this one; he’s directing and producing too, according to Cannes promo material. It seems Donnie’s getting more and more comfortable in the director’s chair after also directing last year’s Sakra. Edmong Wong – writer of the entire Ip Man franchise – serves as writer. Action fans will rejoice in hearing that both Donnie and Kenji Tanigaki are in charge of the action. Tanigaki’s particularly busy these days after recently working on one of the most ancititpated action films of 2024, Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In, and then moving into the director’s chair for his upcoming film, The Furious. Check out the poster and plot synopsis for The Prosecutor […]
Production is currently underway for The Furious, a new Hong Kong-produced action thriller being shot in Thailand. Variety’s Patrick Frater cites producer Bill Kong’s (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Rise Of The Legend, Jet Li-starrer Fearless) attachment as financier and producer via Edko Films alongside XYZ Films. The cast includes China’s Xie Miao (Eye For An Eye 1 & 2, Jet Li’s The Enforcer), Joe Taslim (The Raid: Redemption, The Night Comes For Us), Thailand’s Jeeja Yanin (Chocolate, Triple Threat), Yang Enyu (Eye For An Eye 2) and Yayan Ruhian (The Raid franchise, Boy Kills World). International action and stunt stalwart Kenji Tanigaki (Dennis Law’s Fatal Contact, Keishi Otomo’s Rurouni Kenshin franchise, Donnie Yen’s Sakra, Soi Cheang’s Walled-In: Twilight Of The Warriors) directing. When his daughter is snatched off the street, simple tradesman Konggu (Xie) fights his way through a complex web of criminals in a frantic attempt to win her back […]
To say Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In has martial arts cinema fans champing at the bit would be an understatement. The film, directed by Soi Cheang (Limbo), and starring Raymond Lam (Saving General Yang), Richie Jen (Seoul Raiders), Louis Koo (Paradox), Sammo Hung (Ip Man 2) and Philip Ng (Once Upon a Time in Shanghai) was met with immediate anticipation as soon as it was announced back in 2021. In fact, the film garnered buzz as far back as 2013 when Donnie Yen was rumored to star. Fast forward a decade and here we are, finally getting a taste of what we might see from legendary Action Director, Kenji Tanigaki. I think I can comfortably say that fans won’t be disappointed! While a few snaps of Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In‘s FILMART promo poster made it to Instagram yesterday, Chinese website and newspaper, Ming Pao, posted this teaser late in the […]
I’ve heard some good things thusfar with respect to action maestro and regular Donnie Yen cohort Kenji Tanigaki’s recent directorial feat, Enter The Fat Dragon, a derivative and tributary action comedy nod to Sammo Hung’s 1978 Bruce Lee riff. Tanigaki’s own resumè consists of a sprawling list of who’s-who in hit Asian action films, including and especially in his purview as an elite stunt professional on films like the Rurouni Kenshin trilogy and the Dynasty Warrior game franchise. He rejoins Yen with a script by co-star Wong Jing, and writers Lui Koon-nam and Ronald Chan. Sent to Japan on a routine police escort, Officer Zhu is excited to have the chance to requalify for full time duty as a police officer. However, after a series of mishaps, the mission goes terribly wrong and the suspect Officer Zhu is escorting suffers a mysterious death. Zhu enlists the help of wok-wielding restaurant […]
Donnie Yen fans hard on for another headlining gangbuster actioner after the family-tethered Big Brother will soon have their day with Enter The Fat Dragon, a nod to the 1978 Sammo Hung classic that now takes on a life of its own. Yen reunites with Wong Jing (Chasing The Dragon) who also shares directing duties with fellow Yen regular, Kenji Tanigaki who serves in the action department as he’s done on a number of stellar titles of late, including last year’s Big Brother, and also the Ruroini Kenshin trilogy and Jiang Wen’s Hidden Man to name a few. Fallon Chu (Donnie Yen) is a Hong Kong Police Special Task Force agent. He is an agile fighter with a high crime detection rate and a police role-model in the eye of the public. Unfortunately, his fiancée dumped him before their marriage. Heartbroken, he indulges himself in food to relieve his pain. […]
Whatever is happening in Japan right now between filmmaker Higuchi Shinji and Rurouni Kenshin trilogy action director Kenji Tanigaki, it’s starting to draw some serious attention. Higuchi‘s most recent obligations have been to Toho’s forthcoming Shin Godzilla movie following his completed Attack On Titan twofers which are finally making headway in North America this season. Nowadays, it looks as if his attention has also been devoted to a brand new project called Voices. Music label Flying Dog unleashed a behind-the-scenes teaser for the project with footage showing up to fifty actors and stuntmen wired up and donning costumes by GANTZ’s own Takeda Dango, and performing feats of action amid a rock background, along with action-packed footage showcasing Takeda Rina, Mimoto Masanori, Joey, and Shimazu Kentaro. All this is pretty sudden but the footage is electrifying and energetic as all hell, and whatever happens, it appears to be happening sometime in […]
