Matthew Vaughn Signals Marv Studios With KICK-ASS And KINGSMAN TV Reboots, Film Sequels And Spin-Offs

Readers of Empire Magazine can look forward to more details in an upcoming issue that will highlight Matthew Vaughn’s latest plans for the launch of Marv Studios – what he describes “the modern version of what a studio can be,”. The periodical informed fans on Friday for the burgeroning new production banner from Vaughn who plans to further build on Mark Millar’s famed IPs, Kick-Ass, Hit-Girl and Kingsman.

“We’re going to reboot Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl,” Vaughn confirms. “Look what Mark Millar is doing with the comic for clues.”

According to Empire’s Ben Travis and Chris Hewitt, Vaughn, who directed Kick-Ass for its 2010 release, may focus on the latest iteration, Patience Lee, an African-American single mother and Afghanistan war heroine. The original comic published under Icon with the Patience Lee evolution now housed under Image Comics as of February.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson portrayed the title character in both the original film and Jeff Wadlow’s 2014 sequel alongside actress Chloe Grace Moretz who occasionally lit up the screen in scene-stealing fashion as the deadly, nimble and incorrigible Hit Girl, a.k.a. Mindy Macready. Her role will supposedly move forward in a solo spin-off film, be it an older version of her character or that of a prequel exploring her younger years growing up under the tutelage of Big Daddy, played initially by Nicolas Cage in the 2010 movie.

Hit-Girl is the solo 2012 Icon evolution of the character stemming from Kick-Ass following it’s 2008 publication. A solo film had been long-talked up for years by Millar who told IGN in 2015 that Gareth Evans, the maestro behind Merantau and The Raid films, was once sought after to direct such a film; Evans is reportedly sitting in for an upcoming standalone Deathstroke film.

The Empire report also reveals an explansion of Vaughn’s Kingsman franchise is in store based on the 2012 Icon publication, confirming a linear trilogical conclusion following the 2015 and 2017 films from 20th Century Fox and starring Taron Egerton and Colin Firth. The film will reportedly shoot back-to-back with prequel spin-off, Kingsman: The Great Game set in the early 1900s, as well as an 8-part episodic Kingsman television show that covers a story reprising the roles played by Channing Tatum, Jeff Bridges and Halle Berry in the 2017 sequel.

All current roads point to Empire so stay tuned for more details next week.
