CALL HER KING Review: Wes Miller’s Courthouse Hostage Action Thriller Overrules

BET+ will premiere Call Her King on July 6. The marketing for director Wes Miller’s new film, Call Her King, would certainly have you believe this to be a full-on “Die-Hard-In-A-Courtroom” action thriller with actress Naturi Naughton front and center and leading the charge. The first few minutes introduces our would-be heroine sparring in a Silat sesh with her Pendekar (Anthony Lingo) as a preamble to this, but it’s a lengthy wait to see the actress in any the film’s key action while the film advances forward. We’ll dig more into this aspect of the film later, but more central to the film’s analysis are themes pertinent to the film’s exemplary invocation of systemic corruption in America’s criminal justice system. DUTCH: Lance Gross Stars In New Crime Thriller Coming November 27

True To The Game and This Christmas helmer Preston A. Whitmore II is setting forth in 2020 with his newest crime drama, Dutch. A Manny Halley Production has unveiled a second trailer with a Novembet 27 select theatrical release in the works, with a cast headlined by Tyler Perry’s House Of Payne actor Lance Gross. Dutch is based on the first book of an epic trilogy by author Teri Woods, which launched in 2009 and became heralded by critics and fans as an urban literary classic. The film centers on Bernard James, Jr. aka “Dutch” (Gross), a player who gains control of an African drug lord’s heroine business and effectively ascends to the top of the food chain, only to find himself surrounded by enemies, including a vengeful mafia boss who happens to be a district attorney and former friend. Television is currently the best place to catch some of the best action ever shot on film if movies can’t come fast enough for you. For this, we look to NBC’s most recent announcement of a new pilot for the potential series, Warrior, which is already getting some significant attention as of late with a cast that so far included actress Natalie Martinez leading opposite actor Will Yun Lee. Crossbones series co-executive producer David DiGilio is scripting the pilot and is executive producing with Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald as things continue to take shape for director Phillip Noyce to helm.
