The year is 1992 and it’s a Saturday. I’m thirteen years old and, like most weekends during that time in my life, I’m at the mall. When I wasn’t at the food court horsing around with my friends, or rummaging through the shelves of movies at the music store, I was at the arcade. The arcade was typical of the time period- dimly lit with only the glow from the various machines adding any real illumination to the darken amusement-filled space. It was always crowded and noisy, electronic boops and beeps mixing with loud laugher and even louder conversations as people crowded around the various arcade cabinets. On this particular day the crowd seemed denser, the laughter and excited chatter even louder. Something was happening. I worked my way through the people and caught a glimpse of what the commotion was all about- there was a large crowd packed tightly […]
Following the addition of Joe Taslim for the role of Sub-Zero, word now hails from Rebecca Davis at Variety with talk of actor Ludi Lin for the role of Liu Kang in Mortal Kombat from Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema. Captured by martial arts champion and actor Ho Sung-Pak, Liu Kang is one of seven original characters that emerged in the game’s 1992 launch from former banner, Midway. The character is known as an exiled Shaolin Monk who ventures into the tournament to battle evil sorceror Shang Tsung for the fate of Earth. The games’ franchise success paved the way for New Line’s own live-action films in 1995 and 1997 with actor and martial arts star Robin Shou portraying the role. Following suit, TV origin spin-off series Mortal Kombat: Conquest aired along with an animated series, while a third film never got off the ground. Years later, webseries in […]
Lionsgate/Saban I’m of the opinion that something terribly needs to be done about the whole Power Rangers movie-not-getting-a-sequel thing. It bowed recently in China to the tune of $1.2 million dollar which apparently hasn’t helped it to top its current global box office gross enough for a follow-up, and I generally enjoyed the film here in the U.S. during its run. It also gave actor Ludi Lin a prominent Hollywood role and I certainly hoped it wouldn’t be his last. Alas, he’s reportedly been cast in Warner Bros. latest production of DCEU comic book adaptation, Aquaman, in the role of Murk, leader of the Atlantean army and most trusted ally to our title hero played by Jason Momoa. Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Nicole Kidman, Willem Dafoe, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen, and Temuera Morrison co-star with James Wan directing for a December 21, 2018 release. In the meantime, part of me […]
It’s about time we saw some action here in Dean Isrealite’s Power Rangers. It’s the new film adapting original Japanese IP and its Ameritoku crossover in the 90’s and while we had only a teaser to go by last year, we finally get a full trailer that gives us the goods. SYNOPSIS: Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late. Israelite directs from a script John Gatins, Kieran Mulroney, Michele Mulroney, Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. […]
It’s been well over two decades since Japanese Tokusatsu took America by storm with Saban’s own Fox Kids programming in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and the show itself has spawned a vast, almost nebulous evolution all its own. The costumes, powers and stories have remained ever evolving, turning it into a cultural phenomenon that has done wonders for the comic con community and martial arts fans alike. Thus, it’s only fitting that Lionsgate take to their audience with this weekend’s presentation of the film along with a cast and crew Q&A for director Dean Israelite’s upcoming iteration, Saban’s Power Rangers. With that in mind, Lionsgate just dropped the first official teaser trailer following yesterday’s raft of posters, and indeed, it’s been all about the posters up until now. The footage certainly teases the cream filling of this movie which will obviously be the suits. For now, we get glimpses of […]
Back in full force this week is director Dean Isrealite’s new movie, Power Rangers, now ready to make its presence known at Comic Con International: San Diego ahead of its release next year. As such, the campaign continues as we slowly inch toward a teaser, with a slow and steady rollout of posters and images to bask in – one now coming courtesy of USA Today revealing a new image of our cast in costume. Check it out: The film takes its cues from the 1993 Ameritoku crossover series titled close to the same name for Fox Kids prior to feature film adaptations thereafter. Israelite’s version, a reboot aimed at a potential franchise from Lionsgate and Saban, casts Naomi Scott as Kimberly the Pink Ranger, R.J. Cyler as Billy the Blue Ranger, Dacre Montgomery as Jason the Red Ranger, Ludi Lin as Zack the Black Ranger and Becky G as […]
Director Raman Hui‘s latest, Monster Hunt, drew in spectacular box office figures in China this year. This fact undoubtedly serves well for actor Ludi Lin, a relative newcomer as it was his feature film debut following smaller roles in shortfilms, as well as most recently in the first season of the Netflix series epic, Marco Polo. Credits like these seem to bode well for the actor who evidently tested for a role in the upcoming Power Rangers reboot movie from Lionsgate and Saban Films. And, as it turns out, so it is with the latest social media announcement of his casting as the Black Ranger in the new film directed by Dean Israelite. The team is coming together! #LudiLin is morphing into the #BlackRanger in 2017 for the @PowerRangersMovie.
