Kinberg: DEADPOOL Will Fit Into The X-Men Universe
Producer and screenwriter, Simon Kinberg (Elysium, X-Men: Days Of Future Past) has largely been the go-to for plenty of micro-updates on what fans can currently expect for forthcoming blockbuster films, particularly X-Men: Apocalypse and Fantastic Four. As of late though, the news circuit is also seeing a growing share of news bits giving some steam to the upcoming production of the newly announced Marvel adaptation, Deadpool, to be directed by Tim Miller.
One such update now lends credence to the probability that the film will fall under the umbrella of Marvel’s X-Men universe, according to Kinberg in statements forwarded by Comic Book via CBM. This is quite peculiar, and mainly because leading man Hugh Jackman decapitated him in an the epic final battle alongside Liev Schreiber’s performance as Sabretooth in the 2009 film, X-Men Origins: Wolverine. This is also means tying said film in to the new movie, a formula that director James Mangold avoided when sitting in the chair for last year’s release, The Wolverine, so this may (or may not) impact the universal storytelling process in some capacity. Nevertheless, Kinberg says there’s a grand scheme in play right now to help make it all fit.
“There’s definitely a sort of overall plan that we’ve all been talking about for the X-Men universe now,” Kinberg said, “and Deadpool obviously fits into that. So yeah, I guess I would say it’s part of certainly an overall timeline and thought process that goes into these films, some of which is inspired by the comics and some which is inspired by seeing what Marvel’s done with telling a larger tapestry and linking all those movies together, even as they stand independently as well. The same kind of thought is going to go into these X-Men movies at Fox.”
This also presents a few questions, the most obvious one being how in the hell does Deadpool come back from the dead? Sure he’s got some wicked healing powers to accompany his particular set of skills, but it’s still a question worth asking since the last thing many fans want to see is for this film to fall part without any cohesive storytelling (let alone a PG-13 adaptation for a project that was once promised an R-rating).
Another thing also worth looking at is if whether or not writer and director Jeff Wadlow is going to use the same tie-in formula going into the development of his next film, X-Force. He and comic book creator Rob Liefeld have already stated Deadpool‘s inclusion in the film, of which Cable, Psylocke and Colossus are also frontrunners for the five-member team. In this case, I wonder if he, Miller, Deadpool scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick and the high-ups at Twentieth Century Fox are exchanging notes.
And then, of course, another question worth asking is if whether or not we can expect a Deadpool cameo in X-Men: Apocalypse or the upcoming Gambit film with Channing Tatum. The news is early, really, so of course this is all speculation. But with Deadpool now included in the X-verse, it appears that with Marvel and DC bringing their universes together, as well as the recent announcent of Universal’s Monsterverse, cinematic universes seem to be a thing, which reminds me…I also wonder if Deadpool and Wolverine will get a rematch at some point before Jackman hangs his claws up for good…
