Barring any dispositions you might have about Hollywood’s latest stab at English-language period epics set in, say, France, the latest trailer for Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel has a little meat on its medieval bones as seen in the first official trailer out of 21st Century Studios. Swordplay drama with a dash of crime and controversy and jabs of patriarchy and theocratic rule certainly set the pace here some. An adaptation of Eric Jager’s own 2004 novel, The Last Duel takes place in 14th century France and centers its dark and violent tale on Norman knight Jean de Carrouges, who returns from war and learns his wife, Marguerite de Carrouges, has been raped by former friend, squire Jacques Le Gris, who denies the allegations. No one believes de Carrouges wife for whom the paternity of her pregnancy is now in question. Following an appeal to King Charles VI in wake […]
I’ve never really covered the Bourne movies on The Action Elite. However, I figured during my recent downtime, I would binge them over a weekend and do a little retrospective including the original Bourne Identity from 1988 and the Prime series Treadstone. I go into spoilers here so if you haven’t seen any of these movies then best not to continue. The Bourne Identity (1988) An unconscious man is washed ashore on the beach of a small French village during a heavy storm. A retired doctor takes care of the unconscious stranger. When the mysterious man recovers, he can’t remember a thing. He does not know his name, he does not know where his flashback memories come from, and he does not know why the access code for an anonymous Swiss bank account is implanted in his thigh. As he seeks his own identity, things quickly become dangerous. There are […]
Mike Fleming Jr. is reporting at Deadline with an exclusive on director Ridley Scott’s latest efforts to fast-track an adaptation of Eric Jager’s 2004 novel, “The Last Duel: A True Story of Trial by Combat in Medieval France”. The film will be titled The Last Duel, which Scott will also produce at Scott Free with partner Kevin Walsh. Actors Matt Damon and Ben Affleck will star, and are producing via their Pearl Street banner, as well as writing the script with Nicole Holofcener. The film takes place in 14th century France and focused its dark and violent tale on Norman knight Jean de Carrouges who returns from war and learns his wife, Marguerite de Carrouges, has been raped by former friend, squire Jacques Le Gris, who denies the allegations. No one believes de Carrouges wife for whom the paternity of her pregnancy is now in question. Following an appeal to […]
Director George Clooney’s latest effort with The Coen Brothers has its first official trailer out for a good sampling of some delightful dark comedy in the film, Suburbicon. Actor Matt Damon reunites with his fellow Oceans trilogy star on opposite sides of the camera and with Julianne Moore and Oscar Isaac headlining a tale that hybridizes a lot in its bizzare and fascinating imagery. Think of your favorite sitcom set in the 50’s and then drench it in blood, because that’s what this trailer does. Suburbicon is a peaceful, idyllic suburban community with affordable homes and manicured lawns…the perfect place to raise a family, and in the summer of 1959, the Lodge family is doing just that. But the tranquil surface masks a disturbing reality, as husband and father Gardner Lodge (Matt Damon) must navigate the town’s dark underbelly of betrayal, deceit, and violence. This is a tale of very […]
If there was ever a director able to erect riotous action and visuals with extras to erect some crazy, epic battle action, it would be director Zhang Yimou, the same man who brought audiences films like Hero and the U.S. release of Curse Of The Golden Flower. He obliges well thusfar in the most recent footage unveiled for his upcoming period fantasy, The Great Wall, which is getting a 3D bow next year, and its visuals being a good reason. That said, some of the spectacle is a bit of an eye sore here in the latest official trailer unveiled during this weekend’s events at New York Comic Con. Just a few of the CG shots look like crap and I honestly can’t get past Matt Damon who comes across as the most miscast actor for a film since Tyler Perry flopped those efforts in Alex Cross. I suppose from […]

Universal and Legendary’s latest 3D prospect, The Great Wall, took a bit of time to gather its casting before finally nabbing actors like Matt Damon, Andy Lau and actress Jing Tian who is soon to make her way in Legendary Pictures’s Kong: Skull Island next year as well. That said, it’s a Damon-loaded week with the actor’s latest, Jason Bourne, heading to theaters this weekend, which couldn’t be a better time to promote the epic new China-shot 3D fantasy which retells a mythological perspective behind the construction of one of today’s biggest landmarks. SYNOPSIS: Matt Damon leads humanity’s greatest fight for survival in “The Great Wall” from Legendary and Universal Pictures. Wait…have you been asleep for the last fourteen years? Well, that’s certainly longer than Robert Ludlum character Jason Bourne was, but it still doesn’t undo the depth and overall carnage that enused after he woke up. That, of course, was back in 2002, and actor Matt Damon has brought the heat three times since then and is now gearing up for a fourth opening this Friday. As such, and on the count that you haven’t seen the first three films, Damon is here to sum it all up for you in as little as 90 seconds. Peep it below, and/or watch Movieclips’s new jam-packed ultimate franchise trailer just beneath!
Last week’s events at CinemaCon boasted quite a feat with the upcoming release of Jason Bourne from Universal Pictures. The film’s Big Game TV spot earlier this year certainly garnered some excitement as well, and now with a release set for July, a first trailer is finally in tow. Universal Pictures made the announcement on Tuesday in the following promos just beneath. Paul Greengrass directs, while franchise star Matt Damon returns with Julia Stiles and newly added cast members – actress Alicia Vikander, and actors Tommy Lee Jones and Vincent Cassell.
It’s definitely a different kind of imagery than what’s normally been shown in a Bourne movie starring Matt Damon, but there he is with both hands wrapped and getting scrappy on the set of what looks like an outdoor fight club of sorts. Clearly he’s been working out and so there’s plenty of eye candy here for those interested, and as for the hand wraps and overall imagery, who knows where that could lead? Julia Stiles returns to her role following the […]
The Bourne saga continues to grow this week in Europe with principal photography having already begun for the latest installation from director Paul Greengrass. Matt Damon is taking the lead once more in a role that has further cemented him as an action star in his own right since first starring in the 2002 film, The Bourne Identity, which kicked off a highly successful trilogy up to 2007 prior to branching out with actor Jeremy Renner’s 2012 spin-off, The Bourne Legacy. Nil a word has yet been given in the months since Renner’s return to his role was stated, but Damon‘s reprisal is set to appear for the film’s release next year with a script by Greengrass and co-scribe Christopher Rouse. The plot is also thinly known as well aside from Damon‘s recent blurbs regarding the story’s setting in an austerity-ridden Europe within a “post-Snowden” world, and filming locations set […]
The past several years have shown signs of life for a few more ‘Bourne’ films with mainstays, actors Matt Damon and Jeremy Renner in the wind for reprising roles in their own Bourne films. Particularly in 2015 however, the recent news of actresses, returning franchise co-star Julia Stiles and newly added Ex-Machina star Alicia Vikander have remained productive in building up more hype in anticipation of further news. That effort continues now with word that actor Tommy Lee Jones will be joining the three principles for the upcoming film according to Variety. Jones will reportedly be starring in the role of a high-ranking CIA official geared toward the currently unknown plot with Damon back to star in this, his fourth outing as the lead character inspired by the work of late author Robert Ludlum. Paul Greengrass who last directed the 2007 release of The Bourne Ultimatum will be making his […]
Several years in the making, Legendary Pictures has finally enlisted its confirmed official cast for the upcoming China epic, The Great Wall. Actor Matt Damon is the A-list choice to lead the prominent cast for the new film which also includes popular film star, actor Andy Lau who just recently completed his latest role in the upcoming Sammo Hung actioner, The Bodyguard. House Of Flying Daggers and Hero helmer Zhang Yimou is taking on directorial duties for this one which is set to be a major undertaking as the biggest production in China ever shot for global distribution. The premise alone reads as familar ground for Legendary considering the monster thrillers it’s become known for in recent years like Pacific Rim and the upcoming Skull Island, so this one is bound to leave mark as another truly epic film worth eyeing next year. Read the news below! Legendary Pictures announced […]
It’s taken a few years to get off the ground, but the latest long-awaited project, The Great Wall, finally found a new director back in March with Going Home and Hero helmer Zhang Yimou left since The Last Samurai director Edward Zwick’s departure. This month now following previous casting efforts, the project is looking to bring Matt Damon on board, according to Deadline. Damon, recently confirmed to return to the fray as Jason Bourne for a new film with Paul Greengrass, may star in an epic story set in 15th century China about British warriors who come across the titular wall during its construction in lieu of a threat greater than the Mongols. The actor is among those in an accumulating list that tentatively casts Henry Cavill (Man Of Steel), Benjamin Walker (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) and Zhang Ziyi (The Grandmaster). Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro are producing the script […]
It’s been about a year since the most recent reports suggested, and then denied any possible attempt of reteaming director Paul Greengrass and actor Matt Damon for another installation of the Bourne franchise following the first trilogy… Oh, what a difference a year makes! It appears that Greengrass and folks at Universal were keeping a lid on things at first, and now Deadline is breaking the news that he and Damon are, in fact, on the pathway to another film of the franchise based on late author Robert Ludlum’s work. The Greengrass/Damon film is being tentatively dated for July 16, 2016, which was around the same day that director Justin Lin’s Bourne installation starring The Bourne Legacy (2012) lead actor Jeremy Renner was set to release after being pushed from its August 2015 date. Things are still early so there’s nothing set in stone, but as it stands, it looks […]
Twitch broke the news on Monday that actor Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass are joined in talks to return to for another installment in the Bourne franchise. The news comes almost a year after Damon spoke to Movieline about the chances of his return since actor Jeremy Renner‘s appearance in The Bourne Legacy last year. “There has not been any movement,” he said. “I’ve always been open to it as long as Paul Greengrass directs, I don’t think he’s going to do it.” Damon went on to explain the difficulties and challenges that could come with Greengrass at the helm to follow the events after Legacy, saying “from what I understand, it kind of relives [The Bourne Ultimatum] from a different perspective. What that means, because they use our actors and characters, is that whatever they said [in Legacy] is true and so we’d have to acknowledge it in […]
Just two days away from the release of director Neill Blomkamp‘s latest action sci-fi adventure, Elysium, Machinima now has a new red-band clip from the Sony/Tristar release. The clip is literally an explosive look into what sci-fi fans can expect from Blomkamp’s latest work of art since debuting the unexpected 2009 sci-fi masterpiece, District 9, with childhood friend and lead actor, Sharlto Copley. Based on several TV spots and clips I have seen, I can already tell that Copley will have brought his A-game as he is truly turning into one of Hollywood’s most bankable actors of the new millenium as of late. This, in addition to starring opposite actor Matt Damon playing a bio-suited armor-wearing freedom fighter, and actress Jodie Foster playing an intergalactic dragonlady with her own space planet and the weapons necessary to destroy anything attempting to get close to it, are sure to make Elysium the […]
Sony Pictures will release writer/director Neill Blomkamp‘s latest futuristic action thriller, Elysium, on August 9, 2013. This week, we have a new, impressive trailer that shows a little more of the film starring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Alice Braga and Wagner Moura. I gotta say, there isn’t much else I can say about Neill Blomkamp’s work at this point. The man is impressive with his craft and left a major mark with his previous sci-fi alien vs. human thriller, District 9 with Copley in the lead. wholeheartedly look forward to whatever he has planned for the sequel. In the meantime, yes. I will be going to see Elysium. Do check it out when it releases this August. SYNOPSIS: Set in the year 2159, where the very wealthy live on a man-made space station while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth, a man takes on […]
