In the meantime, with trailers running about, Sony Pictures Australia unveiled its latest trailer several days ago for its own release on July 2, and while earlier trailers have shown more of the film’s comedic tone, this one certainly engages the martial arts spectacle and fantasy much more. If there’s even a chance that director Chen Kaige‘s The Monk Comes Down The Mountain can get the same IMAX release treatment that it will in China early next month, I more than welcome it. Personally, I think any fan of Asian cinema would. The earlier teasers look great and I hope to see even more immersive footage that will help flex its muscles some; The film is packed with a huge cast led by actor Wang Baoqiang, whose charisma and comedic wit can be seen among just a few characters that have been shown so far. All others have only ever been seen in teaser posters, and speaking of, nine more have been added to the album below the press release. Director Chen Kaige is back in the headlines as there’s well over a month left before his latest feature, Monk Comes Down The Mountain. And it looks like our title actor, Wang Baoqiang is in for an adventure that will be much more coming-of-age than anything… well at least that’s the impression the latest trailer gives off. Sexual innuendo aside among all else, I wouldn’t put it past Kaige to leave action out of the equation as there are more characters left to showcase between now and the film’s July 3 release. Plus, the set pieces and various shots are brimming with quality, so I don’t mind the silliness one bit. Actor Wang Baoqiang has proven himself greatly with his comedic acting and screenfighting prowess in several film appearances, most recently with the release of the Teddy Chen-direcred homage to the genre, Kung Fu Killer starring Donnie Yen. These days we can all now catch Baoqiang in any number of promotional bits in lieu of the latest piece of work from director Chen Kaige, Monk Comes Down The Mountain, a film made in large part to expand production company Columbia Pictures into partnerships abroad in this, its second Mainland China production following its co-production for acclaimed director and actor Jiang Wen’s 2014 flick, Gone With The Bullets.
