A pick from Colin Barrett’s acclaimed 2013 short story collection, “Young Skins”, serves as the basis for filmmaker Nick Rowland’s feature directing debut, which underwent its film festival circulation through last year under the story’s title, Calm With Horses. The film was four years in the making with Rowland who partners with screenwriter and longtime film cohort Joe Murtagh, and as such, marks their latest North American outing through Saban Films’s acquisition this month for the film’s new title, The Shadow Of Violence, a more marketable and commercial branding that definitely sticks with respect to the story, though that isn’t to say horses aren’t involved. Formerly titled Calm With Horses, director Nick Rowland’s Irish crime drama had its day last fall premiering in Toronto. The film was acquired back in February by Saban who’ve since rebranded the pic as The Shadow Of Violence, and are releasing the film in the U.S. theatrically on July 31. (h/t: We Are Movie Geeks) In the dark underbelly of rural Ireland, ex-boxer Douglas “Arm” Armstrong (Cosmo Jarvis, Hunter Killer) has become a feared enforcer for the drug-dealing Devers family. When his ruthless employers order him to kill for the first time, his loyalties are tested in this powerful thriller costarring Barry Keoghan (Dunkirk) and Ned Dennehy (“Peaky Blinders”).
