Heading to theaters August 1 is Akiva Schaffer’s The Naked Gun, ultimately a sequel to the classic “Police Squad” brand heralded by the late Leslie Nielsen and George Kennedy. In place of the iconic duo are none other than Liam Neeson and Paul Walter Hauser as the on-screen descendants for the aforementioned pair, and with a brand new trailer to nod fans of the franchise with a raft of slapstick and tongue-in-cheek laughs akin to the brand. Only one man has the particular set of skills… to lead Police Squad and save the world! Lt. Frank Drebin Jr. (Liam Neeson) follows in his father’s footsteps in THE NAKED GUN, directed by Akiva Schaffer (Saturday Night Live, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping) and from producer Seth MacFarlane (Ted, Family Guy). Joining the case are cast Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, CCH Pounder, Kevin Durand, Cody Rhodes, Liza Koshy, Eddie Yu, with […]
A pulsating East-meets-West Hollywood crime thriller classic.
“Every choice, every mission, has all led to this…”
Frank Drebin had a son, apparently!
Another in my list of 2025 bookmarks gets a trailer to whet the appetite with a look at Novocaine from Paramount Pictures. Dan Berk and Robert Olsen direct a cast led by Jack Quaid and Amber Midthunder from a script by Lars Jacobson. When the girl of his dreams (Amber Midthunder) is kidnapped, everyman Nate (Jack Quaid) turns his inability to feel pain into an unexpected strength in his fight to get her back. Betty Gabriel, Jacob Batalon, Matt Walsh and Ray Nicholson also star for the film’s March 14 release. Catch the poster and trailer below, and mind some of the brief, albeit visibly gruesome moments. This one gets bloody.
The campaign has officially begun for next year’s release of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. Paramount and Skydance are releasing the film on May 23 and the first official teaser and poster have made their debut with none other than Tom Cruise front and center on the artwork, and in the requisite action that’s kept the franchise going since 1996. The Christopher McQuarrie-directed second chapter to last year’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning continues the saga with Cruise going head to head with a looming A.I.-imbued threat backed by a terroristic zealot and his army. We see a little more of what that struggle now entails in the teaser culminating footage from previous films as well, as per the new installment’s tagline which reads “Our lives are the sum of our choices” …oof! Cruise also stars alongside Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, […]
Production is now underway in the UK for Edgar Wright’s iteration of The Running Man. Hit Man and Twisters star Glen Powell is starring along with Josh Brolin, Katy O’Brian, Michael Cera, Emilia Jones and William H. Macy. An action classic reboot of the 1987 TriStar release with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Wright takes a page from “Richard Bachman” to provide something much closer to pennamed author Stephen King’s 1982 novel. Wright penned with co-scribe Michael Bacall and is producing alongside Simon Kinberg and Nira Park for the film’s November 2025 release. Based on the 1982 Stephen King novel, The Running Man centres around a deadly game show in which one man must outrun professional killers over 30 days to win a cash prize and save his sick child. 25 years after wowing audiences with Gladiator, director Ridley Scott’s latest test of sequel strength commences with Gladiator II, opening in theaters November 22. Paramount Pictures is already out and about with stills and teaser art for the upcoming period epic and now we have an official trailer that lends an eye to what we can expect from leading men Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington. From legendary director Ridley Scott, Gladiator II continues the epic saga of power, intrigue, and vengeance set in Ancient Rome. Years after witnessing the death of revered hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius (Paul Mescal) is forced to enter the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the tyrannical Emperors who now lead Rome with an iron fist. With rage in his heart and the future of the Empire at stake, Lucius must look to his past to find strength […]
Sam Hargrave will direct Kill Them All, an adaptation of the 2015 Oni Press graphic novel publication to be written by James Coyne. The film’s development, announced back in 2019, is situated at Paramount Pictures with Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec producing on behalf of Midnight Radio. Here’s a description of the book via Oni Press: The new gonzo graphic novel love letter to 90s action movies by Eisner-nominated cartoonist Kyle Starks (Sexcastle, Rick and Morty). A betrayed murderess wants revenge. A hard-drinking former cop wants his job back. For either to get what they want, they’re going to have to fight their way through fifteen flights of criminals, assassins, drug lords, murderers, yup, even accountants, and… KILL. THEM. ALL. The film marks the latest from Hargrave who made his mark in stunt performance in a career that dates back to 2005, honing his craft in online shortfilm content and […]
Barring some remakes of certain beloved properties, I’m of the opinion that all previous live-action or animated treatments of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles all have their redeeming qualities. That said, I’m way more charmed and more fond of directors Jeff Rowe and Kyler Spears’ efforts here on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem than I thought I’d be than when this film was first announced. This film feels more right on cue as an exponentially more youthful depiction of our protagonists guided by the grisled Master Splinter voiced over by Jackie Chan, and the storied progression in the newest trailer revealed on Wednesday takes a delightful, more intrinsic approach to the conflict our heroes face as coming-of-age mutants living in secret from humans while confronted with the crisis permeating the existence of other mutuants. Thus the fitting subtitle, Mutant Mayhem, embeded in the film’s name and suiting things perfectly in the […]
In Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team embark on their most dangerous mission yet: To track down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity before it falls into the wrong hands. With control of the future and the fate of the world at stake, and dark forces from Ethan’s past closing in, a deadly race around the globe begins. Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than his mission – not even the lives of those he cares about most. I feel like at this point watching Tom Cruise run is very much like watching a car chase. The tone, pacing and energy it takes to emulate an action sequence akin to a mechanical vehicle is something Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie are amply good at, casting zero doubt at […]
The Whistleblower helmer Larysa Kondracki will be in good company with Chad Stahelski who’s now riding high with the success of John Wick: Chapter 4 out of Lionsgate. As Deadline’s Anthony D’Alessandro tells it, the pair is set to now venture out together on Paramount Pictures action thriller, Bella which Stahelski will produce out of 87Eleven Entertainment, and has Ready Or Not, Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins and Scream VI actress Samara Weaving tapped to star. Set against the backdrop of a crime wave that gripped New York City in the ’80s, Bella is a hyperstylized action thriller about a cop’s daughter who, as her father clings to life following an assassination attempt, goes on a rampage to unearth her father’s attacker and weed out deep-rooted corruption in the New York City Police Department. Jesse Wigutow, tasked with penning the upcoming revival of The Crow and Joachim Rønning’s Tron: Ares, […]
I’m actually surprised and humbed at this point with the buzz being received by film duo Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley following their SXSW premiere of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. That’s no BS either apart from the buzz quotes being used in the final trailer now online for the Paramount Pictures release opening next week. Admittedly, I wasn’t sure of how all the big and fantastical spectacle would bode with moviegoers what with the prominence of superhero fandom and its creeping fatigue now made just a little clearer WB’s Shazam sequel. Yeah, I’m still a little unsure, but if the buzz tracks and general viewer reactions match, at least we’ll know either way that this film’s success was deserved. A charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of […]
With years of multiple iterations of graphic novel-adapted mediums of fan-favorite IP, TMNT behind us, I guess there’s no harm in having another. Best of all is with producer Seth Rogen at the forefront of Paramount Pictures’ newest treatment with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is a cast and a vision that not only invokes a more teenage look than the usual illustrative hulking beefcake types, but we also get a version of franchise staple April O’Neil as the person of color she was originally meant to be before the powers that be demanded her character don the more whitewashed, yellow jumpsuit-wearing red-head as the toys sold so well. This, and…well…Jackie Chan is voicing Splinter. So there’s that In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, after years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted […]
I stand guilty as charged in not keeping up with all the Transformers films after the fourth ‘Bayformers’ installment, so I literally have no idea where things are, storywise. At any rate, the Hasbro property still has tons of potential and Paramount and Skydance are seeing plenty of it in reviving the franchise with a new film and a new director to bring a new vision to audiences, now in Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts. Returning to the action and spectacle that have captured moviegoers around the world, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will take audiences on a ‘90s globetrotting adventure with the Autobots and introduce a whole new breed of Transformer – the Maximals – to the existing battle on earth between Autobots and Decepticons. Directed by Steven Caple Jr. and starring Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback, the film arrives in theatres June 9, 2023. Also starring are the […]
Paramount Pictures is moving forward with a reboot of The Naked Gun, according to Deadline’s Justin Kroll. Actor Liam Neeson is set to star in the film with Akiva Schaffer to direct from a script by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand (Chip n Dale: Rescue Rangers) and with Seth MacFarlane and Erica Huggins producing through Fuzzy Door. Kroll notes that Neeson “may be playing the son of officer Frank Drebin instead of stepping into the shoes made famous by Leslie Nielsen.” Previous reports have noted that Neeson might have been on par to play the Drebin character. Thursday’s report confirms differently. Late actor Nielsen, who died in 2010 at the age of 84 from pneumonia, popularized the character from its short-lived, more seriously toned appearance on the ABC series, “Police Squad” in 1982, to a more comedic approach in a trilogy of feature films dubbed The Naked Gun between 1998 […]
Following reports back in May of 2019, Deadline‘s Nancy Tartaglione is reaffirming the news on the pending Don Lee and Sylvester Stallone collab, a remake of Lee Won-tae’s hit 2019 action crime thriller, The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil. The original film was released in South Korea by Kiwi Media Group and shortly after by Well Go USA in the states following its Fantasia Festival premiere (read our review). Joined by Kim Moo-yul and Kim Sung-kyu, Lee starred as a gangster who, after becoming the sole survivor among a raft of murdered crimebosses, reluctantly pairs up with a dogmatic cop who despises gangsters, to take the serial killer down. The new film is now in early stages of development at Paramount Pictures. Lee is set to produce the new film via Gorilla 8 Productions, next to B&C Content CEO Chris S. Lee, BA Entertainment CEO Billy Acumen who also produced […]
Saban Films and Paramount Pictures are pairing up to release The Moderator, the new action thriller from debut director Zhor Fassi-Fihri. Jonathan McConnell penned the script with Hicham Hajji, who reunites once more with actor Gary Dourdan following their previous thriller, Redemption Day. Dourdan joins lead actress Irma Lake who plays a covert assassin who decides to take justice into her own hands when the murder of her friends goes unsolved. Discovering the crimes were just the latest in a long streak of sadistic murders by an underground crime syndicate, she will take no prisoners in her blood-soaked mission for revenge as she hunts them down, one target at a time. The film also stars Robert Knepper and will release in select theaters, On Demand and Digital beginning July 29.
