RIDERS OF JUSTICE: Lionsgate, 21 Laps Pair Up For Remake Of Danish Hit Mads Mikkelsen Revenge Thriller

English-language revisits of foreign films can be hit or miss depending on your tastes. Anders Thomas Jensen’s 2020 Mads Mikkelsen headliner, Riders Of Justice, was nothing short of the former, featuring the actor in a riveting revenge tale that now appears to be getting redeveloped over at Lionsgate along with Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps, according to THR‘s Borys Kit. Jensen co-wrote the original alongside Nikolaj Arcel for the story of a soldier who returns home to care for his teenage daughter following the death of her mother, a tragedy which he is then led to believe is foul play which ensues our hero’s quest for vengeance with the help of a discerning group of vigilantes. This will come as a shock to no one, but action films are violent. It’s simply inherent to the formula. Bullets flying, cars crashing, wild brawls, and the destruction of property are par for the course. There is also a lot of death and loss caused by that carnage. Sometimes that aspect is hand waved away with a “just don’t think about it” attitude or it’s used as motivation for even more violence. Rarely though does a film with action trappings confront the heavy thought of what loss and the associated trauma actually does to a person. The “grizzled older badass extracting revenge on people who unwittingly screwed with them” has become a tired trope in the years since Liam Neeson first warned of his “particular set of skills” in 2008’s TAKEN. Since then, almost every action star, or older actor trying to revitalize their career, has done a film with a similar setup, leading to understandably mixed results. If director Matthew Vaughn gets his way, the Kingsman franchise will have at least seven more films as well as a TV series on its slate.
