In what is a masterstroke of collaborative genius, director Ridley Scott teams helms the latest biographical piece on one of history’s most prolific and successful leaders, with Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role. The size and scale of the film is evident in the large scale battles, with evidently no expense spared in these gigantic wars. But ultimately, the trailer highlights the interpersonal relationship between the French leader and Josephine (Vanessa Kirby) as the linchpin and key narrative device. The versatility of Scott is undeniable with a suite of films that are as diverse as Phoenix’ own film catalogue, but far more extensive from ALIEN (1979), BLADE RUNNER (1982) and BLACK RAIN (1989), to BLACK HAWK DOWN (2001) and PROMETHEUS (2012) – this is yet a another demonstration of his broad expertise in modern cinema. Given that this film is clearly a character study, as much as it is a […]
Barring any dispositions you might have about Hollywood’s latest stab at English-language period epics set in, say, France, the latest trailer for Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel has a little meat on its medieval bones as seen in the first official trailer out of 21st Century Studios. Swordplay drama with a dash of crime and controversy and jabs of patriarchy and theocratic rule certainly set the pace here some. An adaptation of Eric Jager’s own 2004 novel, The Last Duel takes place in 14th century France and centers its dark and violent tale on Norman knight Jean de Carrouges, who returns from war and learns his wife, Marguerite de Carrouges, has been raped by former friend, squire Jacques Le Gris, who denies the allegations. No one believes de Carrouges wife for whom the paternity of her pregnancy is now in question. Following an appeal to King Charles VI in wake […]
There was once a project titled The Panopticon back in 2014 for which Keanu Reeves was being primed to star for director Tarsem Singh. This week’s update, in particular looks completely seperate from the aforementioned project announced seven years ago despite the title. As Brian Welk notes at The Wrap, Panopticon is a new prison thriller that will be directed by Andrés Baiz (Netflix series Narcos), from a Black List script by Emily Jerome. The main headliner in the report is Ridley Scott‘s attachment to the project as exec producer ahead of its Fall shoot. Casting is already underway for the female-led thriller which will center on Chase, a rising hedgefund manager who initiates a plot to secure a big coffer from a little known private correctional facility in Arizona that reaps big profits, and the inmates are running the show. Stuart Ford’s AGC Studios is financing and co-producing the […]

I’ll just jump right into it and say that I’m not completely sold here. I’m a fan of the Alien trilogy though, and the fourth is a guilty pleasure of sorts, but I can’t really speak too much on behalf of Prometheus since I barely remember it. Frankly I recall some of the spectacle and intensity in some scenes, but I’m not gonna lie – I pretty much tuned in and out for most of the time I watched it at home. Nevertheless, I’m not a total stranger to the set up now being offered for the next installment from director Ridley Scott in Alien: Covenant, nor some of the grievances fans expressed with its predecessor and from the looks of things, it appears Scott addresses some of them, maybe?… Ah, I don’t know. Horror usually isn’t my thing as these particular kind of films go beat-for-beat with a certain […]
Filmmaker S. Craig Zahler is also a credited author of books; More relevantly, his 2013 publication, Wraiths Of The Broken Land and its 2010 predecessor, “A Congregation Of Jackals”, serve as noteworthy examples of his own inspiration preceding his 2015 horror Western, Bone Tomahawk. Such a vision has since landed Zahler in good favor with The Martian duo, writer Drew Goddard and director Ridley Scott who are reportedly reuniting once more for an adaptation of the aforementioned 2013 novel according to Deadline. 20th Century Fox has acquired the screen rights to the film which, inspired by the book, is set near the Mexican border where a group of men assemble for a perilous and tumultuous journey across the badlands to rescue their captive sisters from prostitution. The report also stated the film will contain elements of “horror, noir, and Asian ultra-violence”, although that portion was since omitted from the piece. […]
Film director and producer Ridley Scott may be busy with another offering of Alien sci-fi for the fans, but now he’s dabbling back into television with at least six projects through his Scott Free Television banner. And what’s more, is that the slate now leaves room for a new TV comedy starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. Deadline reports Scott’s slate of deals between CBS shows developing at AMC will include the new series, Jean-Claude Van Johnson. The half-hour long series will be written and executive produced by Dave Callaham with Van Damme partly starring as himself under the aforementioned alias who also happens to be the world’s most dangerous private contractor. This wouldn’t be the first time Van Damme placed more of himself under the microscope with films like JCVD whilst flexing more of his acting muscle as of late. Moreover it’s not the first time the Double Impact and Replicant […]
It’s been a while since we heard anything about Safe House scribe David Guggenheim’s script for 20th Century Fox’s planned production of Narco Sub, and not too long since action star Liam Neeson kicked off the year with two action thrillers of his own, Taken 3 and last month’s Run All Night. On that note, the latest report from The Wrap has confirmed the actor’s role in the new film in addition to TV veteran Brian Kirk‘s attachment to direct. Simon Kinberg and Ridley Scott will produce with executive producers Aditya Sood and Elishia Holmes of Genre Films and Scott Free Productions for Guggenheim’s script which will see Neeson under durress as a disgraced American naval officer forced to navigate a drug-loaded into the U.S. undetected. There’s no word yet on who will join the cast but the film will undoubtedly be one of several more action roles Neeson plans […]
Wishing actor Harrison Ford a speedy recovery following the crash of his single-engine plane last week from which his injuries have been deemed non-life threatening, hopefully this won’t diminish his recently-announced involvement on, among other things a long-awaited sequel to the 1982 sci-fi noir cult classic, Blade Runner. In lieu of this and with the approval of director Ridley Scott, Warner Bros., the British Film Institute and the Blade Runner Partnership have commissioned a trailer for the 2007 ‘Final Cut’ version ahead of it’s theatrical release in the U.K. set for April 3, which you can now watch below, courtesy of Ignition Creative London. Based on late author Phillip K. Dick’s original 1968 publication, Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?, Blade Runner is set in November in the year 2019, with Ford in the role of semi-retired LAPD detective Rick Deckhard, who, in the course of being pulled back to […]
Put a little concept art online and people lose their minds! In this case, we veer over to the viral artwork of District 9 and Elysium helmer Neill Blomkamp whose conceptual pieces have been making the rounds for sometime now with reference to the once short-lived prospects of an Alien sequel. The original franchise launched by director Ridley Scott in 1979. Starring actress Sigourney Weaver, the film spawned massive cult acclaim among sci-fi geeks, as well as a four-film series in addition to two vs. Preadator-crossover films between 2004 and 2007 before Scott took the helm for the 2012 release of Prometheus, attempting to establish an origin telling in the process. Generally speaking, it wasn’t exactly what fans wanted but the film did enough for a sequel which is now in development…but that’s not all. It was during the production of Blomkamp‘s upcoming March release of Chappie that several discussions […]
As far as live-action adaptations ago in the world of video games and films, there is plenty of room for improvement. Some projects fall short of expectations while others amazingly succeed, and this November, Microsoft and producer Ridley Scott are looking to see what they can bring with the forthcoming release of the new series, Halo: Nightfall. Directed by Sergio Mimica-Gezzan, the new live-action installation will introduce actor Mike Colter in a series that will serve as a backstory for his role, Jameson Locke, leading into the release of the upcoming game, “Halo 5: Guardians”. A new trailer was just released this week, and it looks fresh and solid from what’s being offered. Sci-fi and gaming fans will surely take interest. Halo: Nightfall introduces a pivotal new character, Jameson Locke, a legendary manhunter and agent with the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI), Earth’s most powerful and secretive military branch. When […]
32 years after Warner Bros theatrically released its award-winning futuristic noir thriller, Blade Runner, it appears talk of a sequel is stirring things up at Cannes this year with word that Alcon Entertainment has offered actor Harrison Ford to his reprise his role in the new film.
