Sheriff Church (Robert De Niro) and Detective Zeppelin strive to keep the peace in their rough town, where residents’ only two interests are the church or oxycodone. Newly engaged Shelby John (Jack Huston) and Ruby Red want a fresh start. They decide to have a family together and get clean, with the support of Peter, Ruby’s brother-in-law (John Malkovich). After winning hearts and minds at CinemaCon this week, Warner Bros. Pictures’ continued onward with its now public campaign for the October 4 release, Joker. The latest incarnation from Todd Phillips now presents a non-universal take on the iconic DC Comics villain that might even have you pining over a few “what would’ve been’s” or “could’ve been’s” with this new venture starring Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix in the title role. “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale. I’m inclined to believe Zazie Beetz is co-writer Phillips’ own exercise on Joker’s main squeeze, Harley Quinn. Either way how this plays out, I’m curious to see what Joker brings with The Fighter scribe Scott Silver […]
Director Martin Scorsese is well on the way to finally see his latest period epic, Silence, hit select theaters starting December 23 before opening wider in January. In the meantime, folks in Toronto will get an opportunity early next month to re-live the acclaimed filmmaker’s 1976 brooding crime drama classic, Taxi Driver. The official website has announced a one-week theatrical run with a 4K presentation starting October 7. Critics Night guest, film journalist and Toronto Film Critics Association president Brian D. Johnson will be on hand to host the October 11th screening at 8:40pm EST. Hallucinatory, mesmerizing and strikingly violent, Martin Scorsese and screenwriter Paul Schrader’s plunge into the twisted psyche of a cab-driving Vietnam vet offers a nightmarish voyage into the seedy underbelly of pre-Giuliani NYC. In perhaps his greatest performance, Robert De Niro brilliantly incarnates the lonely and deeply troubled Travis Bickle, a walking shadow adrift in a […]
Replete with boxing biopics as of late, 2016 winds up its latest hard-hitter with Jonathan Jakubowicz’s upcoming drama, Hands Of Stone. SYNOPSIS: HANDS OF STONE follows the life of Roberto Duran (Edgar Ramirez), the Panamanian fighter who made his professional debut in 1968 as a 16 year‐old and retired in 2002 at the age of 50. In June 1980, he defeated Sugar Ray Leonard (Usher Raymond) to capture the WBC welterweight title, but shocked the boxing world by returning to his corner in their November rematch, famously saying the words “no mas” (no more.) That co-star, actor and singer Usher Raymond is in this one is a bit of a surprise to me as I […]
