HUNDREDS OF BEAVERS: Feel-Good Comedy And Pandemonium At The IFC Center
I find myself in a slightly more challenging point in my life. By that, I don’t mean that the last several years of my life weren’t full of resistance and strain, indeed they were. To add, it’s why I can only count on one hand how many times I’ve done anything for recreation or fun in the last year and a half: Two. That’s it. Yes, I’m kind of a introvert, and I’m pretty busy with family matters and work, although that’s not really the point. As a journalist with my own independent platform covering genre film, I also find myself forgetting things. Some of this is due to overload. Other times its due to trauma, like that one time six years ago when I got a horrifying email that became the start of one of the longest and most gut-wrenchingly teachable moments ever etched into my brain. Some of […]

I like this one. From the team that brought you LAKE MICHIGAN MONSTER (MFF2018) comes this 19th-century, black and white, no dialogue, supernatural winter epic we think both Tex Avery and Charlie Chaplin would be proud of. A drunken applejack salesperson must go from zero to hero and become North America’s greatest fur trapper by defeating, yes, HUNDREDS of beavers. Click here for my review of the […]
Fantastic Fest XVII Review: HUNDREDS OF BEAVERS, A Love Story Wrapped In A Jubilee Of Zany, Cinematic Indie Wonder
October 3, 2022: Film duo Ryland Brickson Cole Tews and Mike Cheslik have already made strides in recent years with the harrowing 2018 adventure comedy Lake Michigan Monster, and judging by the looks of their latest endeavor, they’re clearly sticking to what works. For this, we turn to their dialogue-free Hundreds Of Beavers, marking Cheslik’s feature debut with Tews in a starring capacity for a rousing contemporary approach to a classic style of cinema, blending a little bit of everything you could enjoy while rooting for the underdog. Our pointman, in this case, is a happy-go-lucky 19th century drunkard and applejack owner named Jean Kayak (Tews), who finds himself out on his ass one day when he realizes his business has been destroyed. He’s forced to survive in the bitter and harsh elements of the wintery wilderness while struggling to keep warm against tempermental wind and trying to find ways […]
LAKE MICHIGAN MONSTER Conquers This Summer On Altavod And Arrow Video Channel
The Arrow Video Channel is revving up an exciting summer line-up as of Wednesday through August. Filmmaker Ryland Brickson Cole Tews’s feature debut, Lake Michigan Monster, is proudly joining the fray with a bit of fanfare described as “an action-packed black-and-white nautical nightmare, “…crafted an inventive and irreverent homage to the classic monster films of yore”, per the film’s announcement. On the shores of Lake Michigan, the eccentric Captain Seafield enlists a colourful crew of misfits in a bid to slay the hellish sea monster that prowls the murky depths. But as Seafield’s obsession with exacting revenge on the creature that killed his father threatens to consume him, can weapons expert Sean Shaughnessy, sonar whiz Nedge Pepsi and former N.A.V.Y. (Nautical Athletes and Venture Yunit) officer Dick Flynn (Daniel Long) hold the show together? The film has been a world-renowned film festival favorite, hailing from Fantasia with Gold Audience Award […]
