CITY HUNTER Review: A Fittingly Wild Ride With Ryohei Suzuki Front And Center

I spent a good deal of the last nine years doing a hefty catch-up job in anime. Serial work-ups of Tsukasa Hojo’s hit IP, City Hunter, is certainly on my to-do list, although with this week’s release of a new live-action treatment on Netflix, I grew compelled to dive in. As a newbie to the City Hunter fandom, I already had some idea on what to expect in the years since having already seen Jackie Chan take the mantle for his own 1993 film. Director Yuichi Sato’s treatment from Tatsuro Mishima’s script taps into the same silly and cartoonish goofball energy, albeit for most of the way laying up the narrative with a slick, edgy and refreshing approach that does City Hunter justice, without losing its attraction or appeal. Actor and last year’s NYAFF Screen International Rising Star Award Winner Ryohei Suzuki (Egoist) is now the face of the the latest live-action take on manga classic, City Hunter. With an April 25 date stamped, a brand new trailer is in the mix as of Monday, proffering up another promising move in the genre for Netflix in the wake of its recent successes. Ryo Saeba is a “sweeper” based in Shinjuku, Tokyo who cleans up trouble in the gritty underworld. Although he’s an unparalleled playboy who struggles to keep his cool around beautiful women, when he accepts a request, he carries it out with crack marksmanship, impressive athletic abilities and a calm composure. The unflappable, foolish and flirtatious Ryo is played by Ryohei Suzuki, while the heroine Kaori Makimura is played by Misato Morita. Netflix Takes On CITY HUNTER With Ryohei Suzuki Starring In 2024

Netflix just released its first look at actor Ryohei Suzuki (Hentai Kamen 1 & 2, Tokyo MER franchise) in the title role of City Hunter. The live-action feature adaptation of Tsukasa Hojo’s hit manga is being directed by Yuichi Sato (Strawberry Nights, The End of the Tiny World), from a script by Tatsuro Mishima. Netflix describes the project as “a modern-day updated version of the manga, set in the bustling streets of Shinjuku. The streamer has set a 2024 target launch for the film. “When Ryo’s partner Makimura is killed,” the longline adds, “he and Makimura’s sister Kaori team up to find out the truth, thus forming a new duo.” The film hails from Netflix and Tokyo-based outlets Horipro and Office Shirous. TOKYO TRIBE Gets A U.S. Trailer For Its October Theatrical Release!

Director Sono Sion broke the mold with last year’s successful run of the hit action hip hop musical, Tokyo Tribe. Despite a few visible differences between the film and manga author Santa Inoue’s 1997-2005 publication on which the film is based, the fervor has grown immensely with key performances channeled by debut actor and hip-hop artist Young Dais, and actors Suzuki Ryohei, Seino Nana, Sometani Shota and Takeuchi Riki to name a few on top of the action and visual spectacle that ensued. This, coupled with Inoue’s absolute involvement in a forthcoming television series adaptation with producer Patrick S. Cunningham and director Daryl Wharton-Rigby as reported by THR back in May, pretty much solidifies just how big a deal this film has been, and it’s a good thing. Why Don’t You Play In Hell director Sono Sion is back in the fray this week ahead of the upcoming release of his latest beat-em-up gangster flick, Tokyo Tribe, based on manga author Santa Inoue’s 1993 publication and subsequent serial anime. Japanese news sites have begun circulating the now-viral first promotional still for the upcoming live-action manga adaptation, Toyko Tribe. Directed by Why Don’t You Play In Hell helmer Sono Sion, the new futuristic urban action gangster thriller is based on manga author Santa Inoue’s 1993 publication and subsquent TV series, with the first photo arriving just a little over a year after the film was announced last Spring prior to a casting call through YouTube.
